Energy Storage from Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA). Energy storage is the conversion of an energy source that is difficult to store, like electricity, into a form that allows the energy produced now to be utilized in the future. There are many different forms of energy-storage technologies that can store energy on a variety of timescales, from seconds to months.

Power-to-Gas Energy Storage from Hydrogen Energy Center. As the proportion of renewable energy supply to the electricity grid increases, the ability to match this unscheduled intermittent supply with demand becomes increasingly problematic. In fact as the deployment meets and exceeds 20% capacity, as already experienced in many countries, grid balancing issues become acute leading to the curtailment of wind. This is driving the need for long term, large scale energy storage solutions.

How to dispose or recycle light bulbs from The Waste Whiz App, Region of Waterloo. Incandescent light bulbs, LED light bulbs, and halogen light bulbs including those that are ultraviolet (non-mercury) go in the garbage. To ensure the safety of the collection crew, please wrap light bulbs in newspaper or other protective material before placing in the garbage bag or can. Compact fluorescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes or any light bulb containing mercury are hazardous waste and must be dropped off at the Region's Household Hazardous Waste program.

How to sort your waste: Compact fluorescent light bulb (CFLs) from Region of Peel. This item is household hazardous waste (HHW). Take this item to a Peel Community Recycling Centre (CRC) HHW Depot for safe disposal. This item may contain mercury, a toxic heavy metal that can impact the health of the environment. Exposure to mercury can also cause serious health problems. For safety reasons, do not attempt to remove mercury yourself.

Canadian households get failing grade on throwing out fluorescent bulbs by Dani-Elle Dubé, Global News, Jan 28, 2015. A Statistics Canada study looked at Canadian disposing habits of florescent lights (CFLs), halogen lights and light-emitting diode (LED) lights, and found that half of the urban population simply throws them in the garbage.

Where to recycle compact fluorescent lights by David Shum, Global News, Jan 28, 2015. TORONTO - Most Ontarians are disposing their compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) improperly. The Recycling Council of Ontario says nearly 90 per cent of us are not recycling them and are rather throwing CFLs in the garbage instead.

Although the bulbs only contain about 4 milligrams of mercury each, Jennifer Baron, waste management consultant at Golder Associates, says mercury at any level is handled as a toxic substance. Baron warns that throwing fluorescent bulb in the trash the bulb, being glass, can break and allow the mercury to escape ... In higher concentrations, elemental mercury can cause damage to the mouth, respiratory tract and lungs and can lead to possible death from respiratory failure ...

Exposure to inorganic mercury can cause kidney failure and gastrointestinal damage, cause blisters and ulcers on the lips and tongue, rashes, weakness, high blood pressure and muscle twitching. The total amount of mercury emissions from humans around the world is thought to be approximately 2400 tons per year. In 2000, Canadians accounted for about 8 tons.

Climate change from Wikipedia. "Contemporary climate change includes both global warming and its impacts on Earth's weather patterns. There have been previous periods of climate change, but the current changes are distinctly more rapid and not due to natural causes. Instead, they are caused by the emission of greenhouse gases, mostly carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. Burning fossil fuels for energy use creates most of these emissions. Agriculture, steelmaking, cement production, and forest loss are additional sources."

COP26: The truth behind the new climate change denial by Rachel Schraer and Kayleen Devlin, BBC Reality Check, Nov 17, 2021.

[The global climate summit wrapping up in Glasgow is known as COP26, with COP standing for Conference of the Parties. In diplomatic parlance, "the parties" refers to the 197 nations that agreed to a new environmental pact, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, at a meeting in 1992. The UK hosted the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October - 13 November 2021.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) established an international environmental treaty to combat "dangerous human interference with the climate system", in part by stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. It was signed by 154 states at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 3 to 14 June 1992.

The treaty itself set no binding limits on greenhouse gas emissions for individual countries and contains no enforcement mechanisms. In that sense, the treaty is considered legally non-binding. Instead, the treaty provides a framework for negotiating specific international treaties (called "protocols") that may set binding limits on greenhouse gases. The UNFCCC was opened for signature on 9 May 1992, after an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee produced the text of the Framework Convention as a report following its meeting in New York from 30 April to 9 May 1992. It entered into force on 21 March 1994. As of December 2015, UNFCCC has 197 parties.]

What are the effects of global warming? By Stephanie Pappas, and Alina Bradford, LiveScience, Oct 27, 2022. The effects of global warming are expected to be far-reaching and, in many cases, devastating. The effects of global warming can be seen and felt across the planet. Global warming, the gradual heating of Earth's surface, oceans and atmosphere, is caused by human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels that pump carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Are the Effects of Global Warming Really that Bad? by Melissa Denchak, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), May 23, 2022. Short answer: Yes. Even a seemingly slight average temperature rise is enough to cause a dramatic transformation of our planet. Five and a half degrees Fahrenheit. It may not sound like much ... But for the world in which we live ... this small rise will have grave consequences.
More frequent and severe weather - Higher temperatures are worsening many types of disasters, including storms, heat waves, floods, and droughts.
Higher death rates ... extreme heat kills more Americans each year, on average, than hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and lightning combined.
Dirtier air ... Ground-level ozone is the main component of smog, and the hotter things get, the more of it we have. Dirtier air is linked to higher hospital admission rates and higher death rates for asthmatics.
Higher wildlife extinction rates ... As land and sea undergo rapid changes, the animals that inhabit them are doomed to disappear if they don't adapt quickly enough ... a 2015 study showed that vertebrate species (animals with backbones, like fish, birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles) are also disappearing more than 100 times faster than the natural rate of extinction, due to human-driven climate change, pollution, and deforestation.
More acidic oceans ... Oceans are becoming more acidic, due in large part to their absorption of some of our excess emissions. As this acidification accelerates, it poses a serious threat to underwater life, particularly creatures with calcium carbonate shells or skeletons, including mollusks, crabs, and corals ... the U.S. shellfish industry could lose more than $400 million annually by 2100 due to impacts of ocean acidification.
Higher sea levels ... Average temperatures in the Arctic are rising twice as fast as they are elsewhere on earth, and the world's ice sheets are melting fast ... By 2100, it's estimated our oceans will be one to four feet higher, threatening coastal systems and low-lying areas, encompassing entire island nations and the world's largest cities, including Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City, as well as Mumbai, India; Rio de Janeiro; and Sydney, Australia.
But this isn't the end of the story ... Unchecked climate change promises a frightening future, and it's too late to fully turn back the clock. We've already taken care of that by pumping a century's worth of pollution into the atmosphere. "Even if we stopped all carbon dioxide emissions tomorrow, we'd still see some dangerous effects," Limaye says ... But there's also good news. By aggressively reducing our global emissions now, "we can avoid a lot of the severe consequences that climate change would otherwise bring," says Limaye.

How solar panels generate power by Saltanat Berdikeeva, Edited by Hannah Hillson, Save on Energy, 8 Apr 2022. "When particles of sunlight, called photons, reach the surface of the silicon of the solar panel, they reflect off the cell and get absorbed by the silicon. Electrons are freed from silicon atoms once the semiconductor takes in enough solar energy. The P.V. charge makes a direct current (D.C.), captured at the solar panel wiring. A device known as an inverter converts the D.C. power to alternating current (A.C.) — the electricity used for homes and businesses." Includes visualizations to clearly explain the conversion process.

Windfarms kill 10-20 times more than previously thought from Windmills Kill, an Initiative of Saint Francis Arboreal & Wildlife Association, Inc. "The Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/Birdlife) reviewed actual carcass counts from 136 monitoring studies. They concluded that Spain's 18,000 wind turbines are killing 6-18 million birds and bats yearly. Extrapolating that and similar German and Swedish studies, 39,000 U.S. wind turbines would not be killing 'only' 440,000 birds or 'just' 573,000 birds and 888,000 bats (Smallwood, 2013), but 13-39 million birds and bats every year!"
