The Square One Older Adult Centre was formed in 1992. It became an independent incorporated non-profit entity in March 1998. Approximately 1,500 members in 2008. Members used the Centre over 71,000 times in 2008. Approximately 40 bus trips are offered each year. Daily operations are undertaken by four full-time staff and one part-time staff. Over 140 volunteers contributed 31,800 hours of their time in 2008. Seven ethno cultural seniors clubs meet at the Centre on a weekly basis.
The Square One Older Adult Centre is exclusively for adults 50 years of age and older. It is located on the lower level of Square One Shopping Centre, between The Bay and the Bank of Montreal. Once inside the Square One Shopping Centre, you can access the Centre via stairs or elevator. The Square One Older Adult Centre elevator will take you directly down to the Centre from the main floor, between The Bay and the Bank of Montreal.
All rooms are wheelchair accessible.
The Centre is managed by an incorporated, non-profit, volunteer Board of Directors. The organization is affiliated in good standing with Mississauga Recreation and Parks, Community Services Department.

We regret to inform you of the death of our founding Board member and prominent volunteer, Lewis Lawrence. He passed away peacefully on Friday, June 3, 2011.
Lewis was a dynamic and influential visionary who worked tirelessly with the City of Mississauga, Square One Shopping Centre and the Mississauga Lions Club and a Steering Committee of older adults to establish the Square One Older Adult Centre.
Lewis was widely known and respected as a community leader in Mississauga and was named the Senior Citizen of the Year in 1992 and Mississauga’s Citizen of the Year in 1995. He was extremely active in the Mississauga Central Lions Club acting as President for two terms.
Lewis was passionate about the Older Adult Centre and some of his most notable accomplishments were our strong community partnerships, the International Lunch, our rental program and our growing number of ethno cultural groups.
Information on service details are as follows: Visitation at Turner and Porter (Hurontario Street) Sunday, June 12 and Monday, June 13, 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Funeral mass at St. Christopher’s Roman Catholic Church in Clarkson on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
We have set up an Endowment Fund in Lewis’ name through the Community Foundation of Mississauga. Donations should be made out to Community Foundation of Mississauga and dropped off in the Square One Older Adult Centre office or call 905-897-8880.
His many long-time friends at the Older Adult Centre will deeply miss Lewis. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sophie and her family.

Greetings from your Board of Directors for year 2011! The Board of Directors thanks all members for their support and dedication to the Centre. The year 2010 was a challenging one for the Centre as we faced the task of balancing the budget, creating new programs, increased membership against the current economic tide. This year, 2011, your Board’s vision is to pursue new corporate funding. It is an ambitious project and your Board, as a unified force, will be going into the wider community to secure the corporate funding.
Why Corporate Funding? The Centre, SOOAC, has served the Mississauga Community for almost 19 years as our Mission Statement requires. We have reached out to diverse groups in the community. The Centre fills a very special need by providing services to older adults enabling them to live interesting and active lives. However, as you are aware, the Centre is not publicly funded and it is the Board’s wish that the wider community acknowledge our existence and support the services we provide. Also, over the years on occasion we have dipped into our reserves to keep our programs viable. It is necessary to strengthen our reserve fund so the Centre can operate as a fiscally responsible organization.
In addition, the City of Mississauga, as a healthy thriving community, is predicting an over fifty population growth of 36.8% by 2026. (Older Adult Plan, July 2007). It is imperative that SOOAC plan for this growth by being proactive and taking the initiative to provide additional services for older adults.
To plan effectively for the future of the Centre, we need corporate support, long and short term. Long term corporate funding will provide some financial stability re operating cost thus allowing the Centre to expand services and adapt to off-site locations where and when necessary. The Centre will be able to offer more opportunities for all members to participate in programs they enjoy and maintain their active lifestyle.
Your Board is aware that there are many charities chasing after and accessing philanthropic organizations. We need to tap into these resources. With creative and strategic planning, a positive approach and attitude, our project will be successful. Your Board, collectively, has over a hundred years of work experience from challenging jobs. This is our opportunity to put our experience to work for you. Wish us luck.

Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Grant Update:
Last season I informed you of the wonderful news we received from OTF that we were approved for a grant of $219,000 over 3 years to expand our programs into the community. Square One Older Adult Centre has grown so rapidly over the last couple of years, reaching over 1,600 in membership, that we realized we needed more space to continue to meet our members’ needs. We initially thought this would mean that we would program in one location in Streetsville, but instead we are going to try three different locations, two in Streetsville and one in Meadowvale.
Starting the week of April 11, 2011, we will be offering Tai Chi Beginners, Co-ed Fitness, Zumba Gold, International Dance and Computer workshops at the Streetsville Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 139 and Drawing by Design and Acrylic Painting courses at Vic Johnston Community Centre in their meeting room. We are also going to offer some wonderful programs in the beautiful Meadowvale Village Hall. This historical building, with lots of natural light, will be the perfect location for Yoga, Co-ed Fitness, Crane Qi Gong, Line Dance Basics and Games Day.
In order to make this happen, we will be hiring a Community Engagement Coordinator who will develop and coordinate the programs and events at the new sites. We will plan Open House Events at each location including the Open House and Strawberry Social at Meadowvale Village Hall on June 3, 2011.
Your membership at Square One Older Adult Centre (SOOAC) entitles you to participate in all of these wonderful programs at a members’ rate. For an introductory period, we are also offering these programs, at a slightly higher rate, to seniors in the community who are not members. We hope that all will want to become members of SOOAC, but we want to let them give us a try.

In the Fall Newsletter, I highlighted the Board of Directors and the Vision and Mission Statement for our new health and wellness charity. I would now like to highlight our Values for SOSWS.

Registration for spring programs will begin
Wednesday, March 16th 2011. All Older Adult Centre program participants are expected to become members of the Centre and to pay the advertised fee for each program. Participants will be asked to show their 2011 membership cards. Guests can attend programs twice before becoming a member (program fees apply). This does not apply off-site programs during the introductory period. Registration and fee payments (cash or cheque) are accepted in the Centre during public operating hours. The Board of Directors reserves the right to cancel or alter advertised programs, instructors, special events and travel schedules. Full refunds are issued if the Centre is responsible for a cancelled program. Withdrawal Request Forms are available at the Administration Office, and must be submitted before the third class commences to be eligible for a refund. Refunds will be pro-rated and will include a $5.00 administration fee for each program. NSF cheques $25.00 fee applies.SCENT
As a courtesy to members with allergies, it is requested that you refrain from using perfume or after-shave especially during physical programs.

Why are good programs cancelled? Our programs can only run as long as we have a minimum number of participants registered in them. Therefore, it is very important to register for programs at least a week before the program starts. Don’t be disappointed, sign up early!

Need a locker for your shoes or other items? We have new lockerettes available for use in both the Ladies' and Mens' Washrooms. Just come to the Administration Desk to register in order to receive a key for any available locker. Lockers may be used during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Keys must be returned and lockers must be emptied by 4:30 p.m. daily. For an introductory period, this service is free of charge. Service charges may be administered at a later date.
Stop by our Library tucked away in the Cozy Corner Cafe. All books, puzzles, videos, books on tape and magazines may be borrowed for your enjoyment. Please use the sign-out book provided when borrowing items. A catalogue of books on tape and videos is available in the Library and items may be picked up at the Administration Office. Have items for the Library that you would like to donate? Just drop them off the next time you're in!
We welcome your ideas! The Suggestion Box is located in the lobby beside the door to the Administration Office, and we are always open for suggestions!
Did you know you can donate all or part of your HBC rewards points to the Square One Older Adult Centre? The points will help us purchase items we need. Please inquire at the Administration Office.
Don't have time to take a fitness class? Don't like the idea of joining one of those big gyms? Get your daily exercise right here at the Centre by taking advantage of our Exercise Equipment. Learn how to use the Exercise Bike in minutes! It's easy and it's available when you feel like exercising.

Are you taking dance classes for the first time this fall at Square One Older Adult Centre?
Are you age 60 or older?
Sheridan Elder Research Centre is conducting a pilot research project that explores the benefits of dance participation for enhancing quality of life and improving physical health.
Participation in this study involves:
• Filling out several questionnaires at the start and end of your dance course that will ask about your general health, your quality of life, and your exercise habits.
• A brief cognitive screening test at the beginning of the project.
• A short interview at the start and end of your dance class to learn more about your quality of life and general health.
• A short series of physical measurements, including balance, flexibility, endurance, and range of motion.
• Keeping a journal of your experience with the dance class. It will be up to you how often you keep this journal.
• Total time commitment: 4 hours.
At the end of the project, we will host an event for all of the people who participated in the project at Square One Older Adult Centre to present our findings, and to recognize and celebrate those who helped make this project happen!
