    Message from the President:

Please join the Board of Directors and Staff of SQOAC (Square One Older Adult Centre) in extending congratulations to Sue Hesjedahl, our Executive Director and recipient of the very prestigious Person of Distinction Award, presented to her by the Older Adult Centres' Association of Ontario (OACAO) on October 18, 2010 at the OACAO Conference held in Guelph.

The Person of Distinction Award, the OACAO's most prestigious recognition, "is given to the individual or group who has made a major contribution in the field of Older Adult Program and Services. To be eligible, an individual must have dedicated a minimum oif 10 years service to the Centres' Association, served as chairperson on two or more committees and as a member of the executive. Recipients of this award epitomizes the hard work and long service required to ensure the positive contribution of the Association to the success of Older Adult Centres in Ontario."

Sue demonstrated her passion for and dedication to Older Adult Services while nurturing SQOAC from infancy to its present status. This passion and dedication, together with her leadership abilities, motivated her to take an active role in OACAO.  Sue held various positions in the OACAO. Sue has been on the OACAO Board from 1995 to the present. During this period, she served as President (2001-2002), for many years as an executive member and as Chairperson of the Membership Committee.  In addition, Sue was an active or past member of the following committees: Resource Development, Finance and Advocacy.  Sue's desire to make a difference was instrumental in her representing OACAO and all EPCs (Elderly Persons Centres) on the MIS CSS Steering Committee for the Ministry of Heealth and Long Term Care. SQOAC benefits from Sue's commitment to the OACAO as she is able to bring first hand knowledge to our Board. Sue is still active in OACAO as First Vice-President and a member of the Golden Horseshoe Regional Committee.  Sue's years of service, influence, organizational abilities and dedication made her the ideal candidate for this prestigious honour.

Congratulations, Sue! The Person of Distinction Award is well-earned.  To be recognized by your peers is a distinction in itself.

    ~ Esther Williams, President

    Message from the Executive Director

As we go to print with our Winter Brochure, we have had some very exciting news regarding grants and funding for Square One Older Adult Centre. We head officially that we are approved by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) to receive the new maximum amount of funding under the Elderly Person Centre (EPC) Grant. This means that our annual grant has increased from $32,000 to $42,700. We do appreciate your cooperation and assistance as we have launched our "Check Mark" campaign to collect "head count" statistical data for the EPC reporting that is required twice a year. Please place one check mark each day on a clip board found throughout the Centre. We also were approved by the MOHLTC for a Special Project Grant of $9,800 for the 2010/2011 fiscal year to purchase chairs and tables, do some painting, hire a temporary administration assistant and purchase some other new equipment.

We have also received wonderful news that our Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant application (submitted in July 2010) has been approved for $219,000 over 3 years. This grant will allow us to expand into a satellite location early in 2011.  We are still working out the details of the new location but we can tell you that the OTF grant allows us to hire staff for the new location, purchase new equipment and furniture and will allow us to offer some wonderful new programs to our members in the near future. Please stay tuned as we unveil the exciting new expansion details to all of you soon.

Benefits of Participation in Dance Classes
An Innovative Approach to Health Promotion:
Empowering Older Adults through Participation in Dance Classes

Are you taking dance classes for the first time this fall at Square One Older Adult Centre?

Are you age 60 or older?

Sheridan Elder Research Centre is conducting a pilot research project that explores the benefits of dance participation for enhancing quality of life and improving physical health.

    Participation in this study involves:

    • Filling out several questionnaires at the start and end of your dance course that will ask about your general health, your quality of life, and your exercise habits.
    • A brief cognitive screening test at the beginning of the project.
    • A short interview at the start and end of your dance class to learn more about your quality of life and general health.
    • A short series of physical measurements, including balance, flexibility, endurance, and range of motion.
    • Keeping a journal of your experience with the dance class. It will be up to you how often you keep this journal.
    • Total time commitment: 4 hours.

At the end of the project, we will host an event for all of the people who participated in the project at Square One Older Adult Centre to present our findings, and to recognize and celebrate those who helped make this project happen!

For more information, or to sign up to participate, please contact: Laura Surman, Program Coordinator at Square One Older Adult Centre at 905-615-3207, or Kate Dupuis at 905-569-4634, or email: kated@psych.utoronto.ca.
