    Message from the President:

June - Senior’s month: Seniors’ month is here! This month we celebrate our seniors and their accomplishments province-wide. Seniors built our country. We have contributed to the vibrancy of this city - City of Mississauga; we have served as leaders, mentors, volunteers and in various capacities.

There are numerous events organized to help us celebrate the month of June. Square One Older Adult Centre has a list of activities that you would enjoy. Please pick up your tickets for the events you and your family would like to attend. If possible, make it a family (biological or acquired) picnic. How often do we get to have family picnics? While enjoying the celebrations, take some time to revisit your plans for health and well-being (nutrition, dental, accommodation, wills, etc).

Off-Site Location: Good things are happening at the off-site locations. Take the opportunity to visit an off-site location as an individual or a small group. We value your opinion.

Accessibility for Ontarians: Anne Goldspink-Norman, our Administration and Facility Coordinator, attended a workshop sponsored by Ontario Nonprofit Network re compliance with the “Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act”. Square One Older Adult Centre and Square One Seniors Wellness Services have to implement this Act by January 1, 2012. The Act requires that our organizations be proactive and provide services for persons with various disabilities. Anne passed the information to your Board of Directors to bring us up-to-date and to take action. Thank you, Anne.

Milestones (years at Square One Older Adult Centre): Last year the Executive Committee (Human Resources) passed a resolution to celebrate the “milestones” of our staff (at 5-year intervals) who have served you faithfully and diligently.

    Executive Director's Update:

We are pleased to announce that Square One Older Adult Centre has been approved for funding support from Service Canada, under the Canada Summer Jobs Initiative, to hire a summer student again this summer. We are pleased to announce that Malini Sattan will be returning to work with us after a successful summer as our student last year. Malini will start June 6, 2011 in her role as our Community Development Assistant. Please join me in welcoming back Malini.

We are also pleased to announce that Square One Older Adult Centre has received a $10,000 Capital Assistance grant from the New Horizons for Seniors Program. This grant has allowed us to purchase wall mounting fans, new fitness and program equipment, a laptop, printer and data projector, chairs and tables, stanchions and a storage rack. This is wonderful news as we continue to grow and expand our programs.

Square One Seniors Wellness Services gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Pendle Fund at the Community Foundation of Mississauga, a registered charitable public foundation serving the people of Mississauga. We have received $25,000 for our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Accessibility Project. The project will enable our newly formed Deaf Seniors Group to participate in programs and educational events by eliminating barriers.
