Why are good programs cancelled?

Our programs can only run as long as we have a minimum number of participants registered in them. Therefore, it is very important to register for programs at least a week before the programs start. Don't be disappointed, sign up early! In the event of severe weather, please contact the Centre at 905-615-3207. Please listen to the recorded message to ensure that your program will take place.

Update to Members:
Message from the President

Square One Seniors Wellness Services:

We are at the stage of planning the framework within which Square One Seniors Wellness Services (SQSWS) will operate. Sue Hesjedahl, Executive Director and Pat Fyffe, Past President met with a consultant to design the framework and initial strategy. Our next step will be to liaise with governments and corporations to establish partnerships and support.

I have noticed that the Tree of Sharing has many blossoms on it and spaces for many more. Thank you to those who have generously donated. The last day to purchase blossoms is June 11, 2010. Buy a blossom for someone you care about but have not seen or spoken to for a long time! Blossoms are $25, $50 and $75. You will receive your blossom(s) at the Tea of Sharing on June 11, 2010.

Hats Off to:

Lina Zita for organizing and getting such great attendance at the Seniors Information and Active Living Fair on March 25 and 26, 2010. Thanks for the support of the Ontario Senior Secretariat, Older Adults Centres' Association of Ontario, volunteers and partcipants for the success of this event.

Jean Michaels, Director of Volunteers, Karmela Buzdon, Coordinator of Volunteers and their team for a delightful Volunteers Appreciation Event on April 30, 2010. Thanks to Mississauga Central Lions Club for being the Event Sponsor.

Laura Surman, Program Coordinator, Merilyn Pitt, Instructor and the Special Events team for an enjoyable "Beyond Ballroom" event on May 14, 2010. Great performances.

Anne Goldspink Norman, Administration and Facility Coordinator, for demonstrating her sales acumen, and to Vilma Rodriguez as we pushed the sales of Carassauga Passports on May 15, 2010 for the City of Mississauga's 25 anniversary of the Festival of Cultures.

The Ontario Minister Responsible for Seniors, Gerry Phillips, has sent us a reminder that June is Seniors Month. He expects us to use this "opportunity to develop public dialogue on a number of key issues that will face seniors". Some activities for Seniors Month may be found on the website: www.ontarioseniors.ca/seniorsmonth. June 15, 2010 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. We are asked to wear something purple on that day.

On May 1, 2010, Alice Dods and I represented the Square One Older Adult Centre at the Taoist Tai Chi banquet. The occasion was a celebration of parents, grandparents, guardians, etc. in an expression of filial piety.

On May 18, 2010, Sue Hesjedahl, Executive Director and I attended a Seniors Seminar coordinated by the Field Representative of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario Inc. Staff from the Region of Peel, City of Mississauga and United Seniors Citizens spoke at this seminar. City staff used the opportunity to explain Phase 1 of the City of Mississauga Older Adult Plan. The Region of Peel staff explained the new dental plan for residents of Peel which is geared to income.

~ Ester Williams, President

Volunteering ... It's in You to Give!

"There are two kinds of gratitude: The sudden kind we feel for what we receive, and the larger kind we feel for what we give."

We invite you to make a difference at your Centre today by Volunteering. Share your time, skills and expertise with your fellow members.

We are currently recruiting new volunteers for:

Cafeteria Team (one day per week - 5 hours)

Tea Party Gals Leader (one day per month - Tuesday afternoons 4 hours)

Craft Leader (Tuesday afternoons approximately 3 hours)

For more information, please see Karmela, Volunteer Coordinator, 905-615-3207 ext. 104.

"We are all like one-winged angels. It is only when we help each other that we can fly."
