Palisades on the Glen:
Antique Information Day and
Red Coats Moving

 Google image from http://blog.homestars.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/antiques.jpg

Thursday, January 19, 2012 - 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

What is antique? How to determine the Worth of a treasured item.

Realize the potential of your heirlooms! Treasure Antiques of Oakville will offer advice on Appraisals, Content and Estate Sales.

If you have a piece that you feel may be of value, Treasure Antiques will be pleased to do an appraisal, on site, for a minimal fee.

Refreshments will be served.

Red Coats Moving Solutions will also offer helpful downsizing tips.

Tips for Downsizing from Red Coats Moving:

● A well-planned move can have a huge impact on your settling quickly and comfortably into your new life. If you have lived in your home for many years, the thought of moving can be quite overwhelming. However, with these great tips you can start preparing now!

● Make a date with yourself once a week for 2 to 3 hours. You are setting aside time for sorting through your home. Remember it has taken you many years to accumulate things, it is going to take you some time to let them go.

● Pick a "magic" number, and stick with it. If you do like to keep boxes for potential gifts, limit your collectiion to 4 and don't add any more until you have used one up.

● Have 3 sorting piles: 1 - Keep; 2 - Sell, donate and recycle; and 3 - Rubbish. Remove the donations and rubbish as soon as possible.

● When sorting clothes, take all of them out of the closet and put them on the bed. Hold the item up to yourself, if the colour gives you a lift and you feel good about it, keep it, if not, let go.

● Try each pair of shoes on to make sure they fit comfortably and you can still walk in them! Those high heels sitting in the back of the closet may be ready to be recycled.

● Use birthdays and special holidays to give away some of the things you don't use any more. One of those pretty teacups and sauces filled with Valentine chocolates might be a nice gift to a grand-daughter; the whole collection is not.

● Most importantly, take the time to say goodbye to the things that are not coming with you.

"Can a day of simultaneous global ceasefire and non-violence convince belligerents to put down their weapons for 24 hours?" ~ Mississauga Central Library.

The Day After Peace (2008) Synopsis from Fandango.com. "In 1981, the United Nations established September 21 as the International Day of Peace, a holiday created to encourage the nations of the world to reject violence and war as means of resolving their differences. Jeremy Gilley is an actor and peace activist who in 1999 created the organization Peace One Day with the goal of promoting non-violence around the world and taking the International Day of Peace to the next level -- instead of using the day to promote a noble ideal, Gilley wants the warring nations of the world to agree to a 24 hour cease fire each year on September 21, making it a literal day of peace . . ." ~ Written by Mark Deming, Rovi.

Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC)
Sheridan College Study: The use of Natural Health Products in the Elderly

You are being invited to participate in a study entitled “The use of Natural Health Products in the Elderly” that is being conducted by Dr. Dalya Abdulla. Dr. Abdulla is from the Faculty of Applied Health and Community Studies at the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Oakville, Ontario, and is collaborating with the Sheridan Elder Research Center (SERC) to conduct this study. You may contact Dr. Abdulla by calling (905) 459-7533 ext. 5298.

The purpose of this research project is to determine the pattern of natural health product usage among older Canadian adults. It is important to understand natural health product usage patterns among older adults to aid health care professionals in personalizing healthcare and preventing unintentional medication errors.

If you are a resident of Ontario, Canada over the age of 55, we invite you to complete this questionnaire. This survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. All potentially identifying information will remain completely confidential, and will be accessed only by Dr. Abdulla or by a member of the research team at SERC. You may choose to stop completion of the questionnaire at any time.

It is anticipated that the results of this study will be shared either as a peer-reviewed publication or presented in a conference. In addition, reports will be provided to participants through the older adult community centers that participated in the research.

To help you complete this survey, you will need to know what a Natural Health Product is. A Natural Health Product (abbreviated as NHP) is any sort of dietary supplement. It can include products such as vitamins, herbs, mineral supplements, botanicals, essential fatty acids, probiotics, homeopathic preparations, or product blends.

Some examples of Natural Health Products (NHPs) include: multivitamins, calcium supplements, St. John’s Wort, Echinacea, Omega 3 Oils, Acidophilus, etc.

"A young man attempts to perform a spectacular (and illegal) high-wire act between the twin towers of the World Trade Centre." ~ Mississauga Central Library.

Man on Wire Plot Summary from IMDb. "On August 7, 1974, Philippe Petit, a French wire walker, juggler, and street performer days shy of his 25th birthday, spent 45 minutes walking, dancing, kneeling, and lying on a wire he and friends strung between the rooftops of the Twin Towers. Uses contemporary interviews, archival footage, and recreations to tell the story of his previous walks between towers of Notre Dame and of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, his passions and friendships, and the details of the night before the walk: getting cable into the towers, hiding from guards, and mounting the wire. It ends with observations of the profound changes the walk's success brought to Philippe and those closest to him." ~ Written by jhailey@hotmail.com.

Jesus Camp Google image from http://veryaware.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/jesustitle.jpg

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 - Starting at 7:00 p.m.

"Born-again Christian children are recruited and trained to become an active part of America's political future." ~ Mississauga Central Library.

Jesus Camp Plot Summary from IMDb. "Jesus Camp follows several young children as they prepare to attend a summer camp where the kids will get their daily dose of evangelical Christianity. Becky Fischer works at the camp, which is named Kids on Fire. Through interviews with Fischer, the children, and others, Jesus Camp illustrates the unswerving belief of the faithful. A housewife and homeschooling mother tells her son that creationism has all the answers. Footage from inside the camp shows young children weeping and wailing as they promise to stop their sinning. Child after child is driven to tears. Juxtapose these scenes with clips from a more moderate Christian radio host (who is appalled by such tactics), and Jesus Camp seems to pose a clear question: are these children being brainwashed?" ~ Written by Ken Miller.

Examining the Health Impacts of
Under- and Unemployed Highly-Skilled
Recent Immigrants to Canada

By Kathi Wilson, Ph.D.
Department of Geography, U of T at Mississauga

"The majority of immigrants are accepted for entry to Canada under the Skilled Worker Program in order to fill employment shortages in the labour market. Recent research has revealed that an increasing number of immigrants who gain entry under this programme face significant barriers to employment. As a result, many remain unemployed or accept employment below their field of education and training. However, the impacts such employment circumstances have on the health of recent highly-skilled immigrants have not yet been examined.

This presentation will discuss the results of a collaborative research project that explores the health impacts of under- and unemployment among skilled immigrants in Mississauga." ~ Info from The Royal Canadian Institute.

This FREE public one-hour lecture will be followed by a question period during which you can ask the scientist directly any questions that you may have.

NOTE: This RCI lecture is on Wednesday instead of the usual Thursday.

Finding Science in Ice Cream

By H. Douglas Goff, Ph.D.
Department of Food Science, University of Guelph

"The delicious treat enjoyed by countless people as dessert and for entertaining is also a very complicated lesson in several scientific principles. This lecture will describe the manufacture of ice cream and then delve into its structure, which will involve a description of scientific principles such as colloidal stability and freezing point depression to explain how manufacturers make the optimum-quality product. Keeping that quality through the storage and distribution chain to deliver it to the consumer is an equally large challenge involving further applications of scientific principles to understand sugar glasses and ice recrystallization, all of which will be demonstrated in detail." ~ Info from The Royal Canadian Institute.

This FREE public one-hour lecture will be followed by a question period during which you can ask the scientist directly any questions that you may have.
