All films are shown with English subtitles on a cinema-sized screen.

Rated: R, 122 min - Drama | History

Of Gods and Men (France, 2010) - Plot Summary from IMDb. "In 1996, in Algeria, eight French monks of The Monastery Notre-Dame de l'Atlas of Tibhirine have a simple life serving the poor community that was raised around the monastery. During the Algerian Civil War, they are threatened by terrorist but they decide to stay in the country and not return to France. One night, they extremists break in the monastery and abduct seven monks. A couple of months later, they are found dead in controversial circumstances." ~ Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Of Gods and Men Movie Synopsis from Tribute.ca. "Eight monks live in a Cistercian monastery in the wild, parched, sun-drenched landscape of Algeria. They live out an unchanging daily ritual of farming and praying, marked by communal meals and chants. Theirs is a spiritual existence, but they also live and work in harmony with the locals, providing medical care while also taking part in local Muslim customs. One of the monks is as conversant with the Koran as he is with the Bible.

But outside the doors of their monastery other more sinister forces are at work. When a group of Croatian workers are murdered, the local mayor urges the brothers to close their doors and move away. This forces a crisis of conscience among the eight men, and when a fundamentalist militia group turns up one day, the choices they must make become very real and immediate. It soon becomes apparent to some of the monks that their very lives may well be in danger."

Friday, April 19 - 2:00 p.m.

Rated: PG-13, 117 min - Comedy | Drama | War

Divided We Fall - Plot Summary from IMDb. "In World War II Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, a childless couple, Josef and Marie Cizek, can only watch while the Jewish family of their employers, the Wieners, are first removed from their own home to a spare room in their house by the Nazis, then removed to the far off facility of Thierenstadt. Years later, young David Wiener, the sole surviving member of that family has managed to escape and make it to the Cizeks. Although fully aware of the extreme danger of harbouring a Jew in the Third Reich, the Cizek's can not permit themselves to leave David to certain death and agree to hide him. However, this decision leads to terrible danger of discovery by the Nazis and especially their friend and Nazi collaborator, Horst Prohazka, who is attracted to Marie. With desperate cleverness and luck, the Cizeks struggle to keep the secret, even when Horst begins to suspect. In doing so, they find themselves making unorthodox choices and learning about the true nature of the people around them." ~ Written by Kenneth Chisholm.

Cam Wooledge Photo by I Lee, May 29, 2012 at Older Adult Centre
Cam Wooledge

Cam Wooledge, Volunteer for Older Adult Centre: "Cam has been a Volunteer with the Older Adult Centre since 1998. This April, she will be celebrating 15 years of Volunteer service with our organization . . .

Cam is an incredibly driven, hard-working, compassionate and generous individual. Her life has been committed towards rasing awareness about our Centre, fundraising and making a difference in people's life through sharing her life's experience and challenges with others.

Cam is a gifted entertainer, 'professional whistler' and is always reaching out and brightening people's lives with her gift of whistling.

Although she is now 85 years young, Cam continues to grace our Centre at least three times a week. Her mission is one of welcoming all who visit our Centre, provide guidance to various programs, assist with lobby sales, program support, and fundraising and plays a very key role with our Variety Shows and musicals.

In addition, Cam continues to act as a 'key Volunteer, member and fundraiser' for our Walk-A-Thons . . . Cam's commitment towards making a meaningful difference in people's lives is evident in her mission of reaching out in the Mississauga community and visiting senior's homes, non-profit organizations and sharing her life story with others while whistling a tune for all to enjoy . . ." ~ Nominated by Laura Surman.

And Neither Have I Wings to Fly: Labelled and Locked Up in Canada's Oldest Institution by Thelma Wheatley
And Neither Have I Wings to Fly:
Labelled and Locked Up
in Canada's Oldest Institution

This is an important, historic book. It exposes the institutionalization of the "mentally ill" and "feeble-minded" in Ontario who were put away in Ontario Hospital School, the institution in Orillia, Ontario, over the last century. It is one family's true story of what happened to them inside Orillia, when "the unfit" and the "feeble-minded" were put away, segregated and often sterilized.

But who are "the unfit" in our society? And who decides?

Walter is assigned to attend a conference about Global Policy and Development at New York University, where he is to give a lecture about a paper on which he is co-author. However, after an incident in the subway, Tarek is arrested by the police and sent to a detention center for illegal immigrants. Le secret de Chanda (original title, French: The secret of Chanda)

Life Above All (South Africa 2010) Movie Poster Google image from http://s0.culture.com/image_lib/11907_poster.jpg

Wednesday, June 5, 2013 - Starting at 6:30 p.m.

All films are shown with English subtitles on a cinema-sized screen.

Rated: PG-13, 100 min - Drama

Directed by South African filmmaker Oliver Schmitz ("Mapantsula", "Paris, je t'aime"), film is based on the international award winning novel "Chanda's Secrets" by Allan Stratton.

Life, Above All (South Africa, 2010) - Plot Summary from IMDb. "In the dusty small town of Elandsdoorn, a South African township not far from Johannesburg, life is simple and serene. A prevailing sense of deep pride tightly bonds together the entire community - but beware to those who step out of line ... 12-year-old Chanda is a hardworking promising young student with a bright future, but her life changes dramatically when her baby sister unexpectedly dies. Heartbroken, Chanda's mother, Lillian, in turn becomes severely ill. Her stepfather drowns himself in alcohol, leaving the young girl to take care of her two smaller siblings.

Meanwhile, the formerly friendly neighbors become increasingly distant and gossip spreads. 'Auntie' Tafa does what she can to help by getting Lillian to leave town, but not even 'Auntie' is immune to the cloud of fear filtering across Elandsdoorn. Suspecting that the community's irrational ostracism has to do with her mother's illness and the death of her baby sister, Chanda demands answers but is met with stubborn silence. Unwilling to bear the weight of secrecy any longer, Chanda sets out to face a deeply engrained, unspoken taboo ... " ~ Written by Bavaria International.

Where Do We Go Now? (Lebanon, 2011) - Plot Summary from IMDb. "Christians and Muslims lived peacefully together for years in this small Lebanese village, but animosities begin to build among the men as a result of slights and misunderstandings. The women of the village conspire to avert sectarian strife through a series of harebrained plans, none of which succeeds in slowing down the escalating spiral of violence. When tragedy strikes, the women find themselves driven to make a deeply personal sacrifice for the sake of peace." ~ Written by The Oddball.

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 - Starting at 6:30 p.m.

All films are shown with English subtitles on a cinema-sized screen.

Rated: PG-13, 94 min - Comedy | Drama

Monsieur Lazhar (Belgium 2011) - Plot Summary from IMDb. "Montréal public grade school teacher Martine Lachance has just committed suicide by hanging in her classroom. One of her pupils, Simon, is the one that finds her, although another of her students, Alice, also ends up seeing the hanging dead body. Beyond the provision of grief counseling, Mme. Vaillancourt, the school's principal, has a difficult time finding a replacement teacher because of the gruesome nature of the death, which is why she hires Algerian immigrant, Bachir Lazhar, despite her reservations in doing so.

Lazhar lied about both his background and his Canadian residency status to get the job. In reality, he is going through the refugee claimant process to stay in Canada, that process which includes digging up the painful reason for leaving Algeria without his wife and two children. Lazhar goes through a steep learning curve in teaching his class of eleven and twelve year olds, his style and methods which resemble old school teaching, such as hitting the students as discipline and using antiquated teaching terminology. As he progresses through the year, his interactions with both his students and school colleagues shows Lazhar that perhaps it is time to move on with his life in every aspect. However, Martine's death hangs over the classroom like the unspoken elephant in the room, especially as it has to do with Simon and Alice's relationship with each other since the death." ~ Written by Huggo.
