Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP)
Consultation Meeting

Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP) Consultation Meeting Google image from http://mitziehunter.onmpp.ca/Biography
Mitzi Hunter, MPP

Friday, February 6, 2015 - 4:00 - 5:30 pm

The Associate Minister of Finance, Minister Mitzie Hunter, is having community consultation meetings across Ontario to get the input of community members on the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP). One of those consultation meetings will be taking place in Mississauga and it is an opportunity for you to appear at the meeting to add your voice to the conversations.

Mitzie Hunter is the MPP for Scarborough-Guildwood and is responsible for pension reform.

If you are able to attend the meeting, please RSVP directly to invitations.fin@ontario.ca.

CARP Mississauga encourages CARP members from your Chapter to attend the meeting, representing CARP and your local CARP Mississauga Chapter 35!

CARP's Position on the ORPP:
● CARP is in support of the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP) as it is aimed to provide greater retirement pension security for all working Ontarians.
● The ORPP should aim to provide retirement security for as many people as possible but in particular, the middle-income earners.as most middle-income workers do not have access to a pension plan.
● The ORPP should have the features of CARP's long-proposed Universal Pension Plan:
      1) is independent of government or single employers;
      2) uses existing enrolment and administration mechanisms (specifically mandatory enrolment);
      3) is professionally management with low fees;
      4) is large enough to ensure stability; and
      5) has portability with predictable benefits.
● Low-income earners should have the option to join the ORPP but governments must address the financial burdens that it would have on low-income earners.

Read CARP's original Pension Reform Paper.

Norman is considered a freak by his schoolmates since he speaks to the dead, including his grandmother who watches horror movies on television with him. However nobody believes that Norman has this ability besides his friend Neil.

Norman's deranged uncle Mr. Prenderghast meets Norman and tells him that he must protect Blithe Hollow from a witch's curse. Soon Mr. Prenderghast dies and his ghost explains to Norman that he should get his book and perform a ritual in the witch's grave. Norman finds the book - a fairytale - and then goes to the seven graves where the men who condemned the witch are buried. However, Norman is interrupted by the school bully Alvin, and the dead arise and invade the town. Soon Norman has a dream and finds that the witch is the girl Agatha that was sentenced to death in 1712 due to her medium ability. Now Norman needs to convince Agatha that her revenge is making her the same as those who killed her." ~ Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazi .

Aluminum Wiring: Debunking the Myths

Free Home Safety Seminar

Fire Hazards Google image from http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/htjostheim/htjostheim0804/htjostheim080400038/2806680-burning-house.jpg

Tuesday, February 10, 2015 - 7:00 - 8:30 pm. FREE

Birnie CurrentSAFE will partner with Mississaugas Fire Services to host this free home safety seminar on how to deal with potential hazards of residential aluminum wiring. This seminar will also feature a presentation on fire prevention and escape plans by Michele Allen, Fire & Life Safety Educator at Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services.

Michele Allen, Public Education Officer at Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services
Michele Allen

See Tim Birnie's article: Aluminum wiring – a fire waiting to happen? "Aluminum wiring presents potential hazards that homeowners need to understand in order to protect their homes and their families ... Although warnings have been issued by regulatory bodies in both Canada and the U.S., many homeowners remain unaware of the potential dangers. Aluminum wiring itself is not a problem, but there are issues when it comes to how it is used and maintained. For instance, aluminum wiring oxidizes at termination points much faster than traditional copper wiring, resulting in electrical arcing and overheating without proper maintenance. That means every plug, switch and junction box could be a fire waiting to happen."

See also: Aluminum wiring in residential installations from Electric Safety Authority (ESA). "... purchasers or owners of homes built from the mid 1960’s until the late 1970’s with aluminum wiring are finding that many insurers will not provide or renew insurance coverage on such properties unless the wiring is inspected and repaired or replaced as necessary and this work is inspected by ESA and a copy of the certificate of inspection is provided to the insurer ... Some homes may have a mixture of aluminum and copper wiring ... Aluminum wiring itself is safe and if proper connections and terminations are made ... there should be no problems with the aluminum wiring installation."

Attendees can register online at ismyhomesafe.ca or call 1-855-569-1818.

Anti-Terrorism Town Hall Meeting

Streetsville Legion Branch 139

Anti-Terrorism image from MP Brad Butt's flyer - email Feb. 2015

Tuesday, February 10, 2015 - 7:00 - 9:00 pm

MP Brad Butt invites you to attend an anti-terrorism town hall meeting that he is hosting at the Streetsville Legion at 101 Church Street from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Registration will begin at 7:00 pm.

The town hall meeting is in line with new legistration, Bill C-51, Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015, that was introduced on Friday, January 30, 2015. Bill C-51 will better protect Canadians from the evolving threat of terrorism and help keep our communities safe. The world is a dangerous place and as most brutally demonstrated by last October's attacks in Ottawa and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Canada is not immune to the threat of terrorism.

"The highest responsibility of our Government is to help keep Canadians safe and our country secure. The international radicalist movement has declared war on Canada. The measures introduced today will strengthen and proterct the rights of Canadians against those of radical terrorists who seek to destroy the very principles which make Canada the best country in the world in which to live."

The proposed legislation includes a comprehensive package of measures that will:
● criminalize the advocacy or promotion of terrorism offences in general;
● counter terrorist recruitment by giving our courts the authority to order the removal of terrorist propaganda online;
● enhance the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS)'s powers to address threats to the security of Canada while ensuring that courts maintain oversight;
● provide law enforcement agencies with enhanced ability to disrupt terrorism offences and terrorist activity;
● enhance the Passenger Protect Program by further mitigating threats to transportation security and preventing travel by air for the purpose of engaging in terrorism;
● make it easier for law enforcement agencies to detain suspected terrorists before they can harm Canadians and to toughen penalties for violating court ordered conditions on terrorist suspects;
● enable the effective and responsible sharing of relevant national security information across federal departments and agencies to better identify and address threats;
● ensure that national security agencies are better able to protect and use classified information when denying entry and status to non-citizens who pose a threat to Canada; and,
● provide witnesses and other participants in national security proceedings and prosecutions with additional protection.

On February 3, 2015, Jason Kenney, Conservative MP for Calgary Southeast, has started the Petition: Bill C-51, the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015. "Unlike the CBC article below, our Government has never hesitated to call jihadi terrorism what it is. As the events of recent months have made clear, the international jihadist movement has declared war on Canada and our allies because they hate our society and the values that make us strong.

Sign this petition if you agree that Parliament should pass Bill C-51, the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015, as quickly as possible to give law enforcement agencies the enhanced ability to detect and prevent terrorism offences and terrorist activity, and give national security agencies the ability to prevent foreigners who pose a threat to Canada from coming to Canada or obtaining Canadian citizenship."

If you would like to register for this town hall meeting, please call MP Brad Butt's office at 905-812-1811 or email him at Brad.Butt.C1@parl.gc.ca.

The Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count 2015 Poster Google image from http://www.friendsofgreatswamp.org/Docs/GBBC%20Poster%202015-Local%20info.pdf

Friday, February 13 - Sunday, February 16, 2015

The GBBC is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society with partner Bird Studies Canada and is made possible in part by sponsor Wild Birds Unlimited.

The annual 4-day event in February (February 13-16, 2015) was launched in 1998 in North America. This year will be the third year that it is global.

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) kicks off on Friday, February 13, and runs through Monday, February 16, 2015. Anyone, anywhere in the world can count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count and enter their sightings at www.BirdCount.org. The information gathered by tens of thousands of volunteers helps track the health of bird populations at a scale that would not otherwise be possible.

In 2013, the Great Backyard Bird Count shattered records after going global for the first time, thanks to integration with the eBird online checklist program launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab and Audubon. Participants reported their bird sightings from 6 continents, including 110 countries and independent territories. About 34 million birds and 4,258 species were recorded - more than one-third of the world's total bird species documented in just four days.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with nature and make a difference for birds. It's free and easy. To learn more about how to join the count visit www.birdcount.org and view the winning photos from the 2013 GBBC photo contest. See also: 2015 Prizes.

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time.

Don't know a robin from a blue jay? No problem! Visit this guide to help with bird identification.

Here's how the count works: Simply tally the numbers and kinds of birds you see for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count. Make your best estimate of how many birds you saw of each species. You can count from any location, anywhere in the world! And it's free!

If you are new to the count, first register online then enter your checklist. If you have already participated in another Cornell Lab citizen-science project, you can use your existing login. Enter your list(s) online at gbbc.birdcount.org. Put in a new checklist: for each new day, for each different location, for the same location, same day, if you counted at a different time of day.

How to get started
To create an account
To register for the count
To submit your observations

Note: Look for the “Submit Observations” tab on the Great Backyard Bird Count (or eBird) website. You can start entering bird lists at midnight local time on the first day of the count, anywhere in the world. Go to GBBC Instructions: HOW TO COUNT THE BIRDS: Easy as 1-2-3! for detailed instructions.

This free, family-friendly educational activity is loads of fun and supports bird conservation! You can make a difference for birds by counting the birds in your neighbourhood. For more information, email Canadian GBBC Coordinator Kerrie Wilcox at gbbc@birdscanada.org.

Location: Your own backyard, local parks, nature reserves, or wherever birds happen to be.

Seedy Saturday 2015 - Seedy Saturday Mississauga - Supporting You to Grow Your Own!!

Interested in gardening? Come and meet vendors selling organic vegetables / garden seeds, get involved with and learn from various organizations and experts, enjoy the Valentine Organic Cafe, and attend one or more of the nine FREE informative workshops throughout the day, starting at 10:00 am.

The 9th Annual Seedy Saturday in Mississauga will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a community event, with no admission charge, sponsored by Seeds of Diversity Canada, Unitarian Congregation in Mississauga, Greening Sacred Spaces and Mississauga Master Gardeners.

This year, the focus is on growing your own vegetables (as well as beautiful gardens), since prices have certainly increased. Even if you have a sunny balcony or patio, you can grow tomatoes and herbs that will delight and be a fraction of the market cost.

If you are a seed saver, two Seed Exchanges will be offered by Seeds of Diversity and Mississauga Master Gardeners. Ensure your seeds are clearly identified. Heritage and organic seeds will be available from local vendors.

Free gardening advice will be offered by Mississauga Master Gardeners, along with nine workshops and a diversity of vendors offering information and supplies.

The All Day Valentine's Café offers a menu of delicious home-made and healthy foods.
