We’re celebrating Canada’s 147th birthday in style!

Global Toronto's Leslie Roberts and Liza Fromer host the show, kicking off the day with the official ceremony, leading into an incredible Circo De Calle performance, Canadiana cirque acts with mile high stilt walkers, mind-blowing Mirror People, and festive face painting.

Make some noise in the spirit pavilion with our drum station and samba troupe performances.

Check out the line-up of food trucks and vendors serving up gourmet curbside cuisine.

Mississauga’s own DJ 4Korners keeps the party going all day long with a live spin! With performances from pop heartthrob Tyler Shaw, JUNO Award winning R&B superstar JRDN, and Canada’s pop darling Alyssa Reid. Don’t miss an awe inspiring, gravity defying secret performance before we countdown to an explosive fireworks finale.

Being Grateful for a Canada We Take for Granted

How often have we taken for granted our homeland, our Canada?
The beauty of its expansive landscapes, forests so lavishly green.
Its culture steeped in British traditions, mingled with rich diversity,
Accepting and respecting of the many differences that make us unique,
Weaving us together into the common fabric of our sweeping humanity.
A nation of boundless potential, with the character of charity, civility, and humility,
Respectfully upholding our law and order, peace, dignity, and the freedoms of democracy.
A people of hope and confidence, courage and independence, initiative and industry,
A country of plentiful with generosity, a refuge for the displaced, lost, and weary,
With well-kept neighborhoods, well built homes, the comforts of a peaceful, secure abode.
As we celebrate Canada Day, may we be thankful for our “Canadian way of life” -
Our joy of being Canadian!

~ By M. Pamela Kukde, Member of Older Adult Centre.

Above poem was written in loving memory of Pamela's mother, the Late Mrs. Rina Kukde, who was a former Member of the Volunteer Board of Directors at Older Adult Centre, honored by the Rotary Club of Mississauga and Lakeshore, recipient of the Mississauga Senior Citizen of the Year Award in 2003, as well as Senior of the Year Award in 2004 from the Ontario Government.

The July 6, 2014 event will run from 10 am to 4 pm, rain or shine. All automotive makes and models, domestic and import are welcome. Custom and modified vehicles are also welcome. Show car entry fee is $20 at the gate and includes a goody bag. Trophies and dash plaques will be awarded in several categories.

Approximately 150 classic cars will surround the perimeter of the artificial turf and along City Centre Drive. Additional show car parking space is available in the Morguard lot across from Celebration Square. In total, the organizers are prepared to display up to 500 show cars as part of the event.

Free spectator parking is available in the underground parking lots below Celebration Square and City Hall. Peel Police will be on-hand to direct traffic and ensure the event runs smoothly.

Classics On The Square will be a family-friendly event with kids’ activities such as face painting and appearances by superhero figures like Batman and The Riddler. Classic rock cover band “Itchy Scratchy” will play throughout the day. There will be food vendors offering hot dogs, hamburgers and frozen treats. Door prizes and celebrity appearances are in the works.

Organizers expect more than 5,000 spectators to pass through Celebration Square that day. Spectator entrance is FREE although cash donations are encouraged. Blaine Shaw: "This is going to be a fun family event for car enthusiasts and the general public. There will be something for everyone at Classics On The Square."

FREE CPR Hands On Training

Wednesday, July 9, 2014 - 6:30 - 7:15 pm

FREE CPR Hands On Training from SNAP North Mississauga, August 2014, p. 15.
Photos and event submitted to Snapd, Website code: penbjv

Ward 9 Councillor Pat Saito and Ward 3 Councillor Chris Fonseca are hosting a CPR training event at Celebration Square.

Peel Paramedics will be providing Hands On CPR (non certification) training for the public. Mayor McCallion will also be in attendance.

Everyone is welcome to attend and learn how to do CPR. Learning CPR can save a life.

About 92 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital, but statistics prove that if more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim’s chance of survival. Most people don’t know how to perform it. Given properly and immediately to sudden cardiac arrest victims, CPR can save lives. This event will be a fun way to show people the basics of CPR.

The training will be led by Brad Bowie, Peel Paramedics Community Relations Specialist. Also involved are Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, Peel Regional Police, the Mikey Network, and St. John Ambulance.

Slimming Meals That Heal: Lose Weight Without Dieting, Using Anti-inflammatory Superfoods by Julie Daniluk image from Amazon.com

Thursday, July 10, 2014 - 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Diets fail because they are a self-imposed temporary food prison that we can't wait to escape. Julie's new book, Slimming Meals That Heal: Lose Weight Without Dieting, Using Anti-inflammatory Superfoods will shatter your need to count calories and fight cravings by offering the Live-It, a delicious new way of eating that reduces the inflammation that looms in the background of anyone who struggles with their weight.

This talk will cover new research on the power of omega 3 to curb inflammation, and conquer the leading cause of stubborn weight gain.

Nutritionist Julie Daniluk hosts The Healthy Gourmet on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), a reality cooking show that looks at the ongoing battle between taste and nutrition. Her first bestselling book, Meals That Heal Inflammation: Embrace Healthy Living and Eliminate Pain, One Meal at a Time, advises on allergy-free foods that both taste great and assist the body in the healing process. Her new book, Slimming Meals That Heal: Lose Weight Without Dieting, Using Anti-inflammatory Superfoods, explains the link between inflammation and weight gain.

Julie has appeared on The Dr. Oz Show and is a resident expert for The Marilyn Denis Show and Reader's Digest. "The Pioneers"
Social Studies Lecture
by Lianne Harris
at Palisades
on the Glen
July 16, 2014

Being a pioneer wasn't all about making soap, hauling hay and milking cows! The era introduced us to great thoughts, exciting people, and some unusual innovations!

This informative, interactive presentation allows participants to better enjoy and appreciate pioneer life. Wearing a 19th century costume (ah, but no 18-inch waist corset!), Ms Harris introduces participants to the social, political, and sexual politics of the times, the struggle between class and money, age and gender roles, immigration, and the wonderous innovation, ideas and products we're indebted to.

Participants are invited to see first-hand a full array of authentic and antique items.

Lianne Harris is an author, teacher, business owner, public speaker, artist, and historian. She is the co-owner of Natural Stuff Inc. dedicated to education and healthcare. Lianne was chosen as one of Toronto’s Top Achievers by W.O.M.A.D. (Women in Advertising). She is the author of various books including historical novels used in US gifted programs and was an exhibiting artist at the Royal Ontario Museum, Roy Thomson Hall, The I.D.A. Gallery, and The Shaw Festival.

A resource specialist in education, she has taught over 50 000 students and adults and has been the keynote speaker at many professional, academic and organization events. She is currently working on her next book about women in history. Lianne’s captivating and entertaining workshops and presentations are the perfect combination of solid expert substance, contagious warmth, and original humour. Her ability to blend story-telling, wisdom, and practicality while often weaving her expert knowledge of women in history, allows her audience to takeaway proven methods on how to reach new levels of productivity, achieve goals, challenge fear and prepare for change.

Lianne is the author of many books including A Winter's Knight (a blending of medieval history and fiction for teeenage readers), two medieval novels as well as non-fiction books on Bangladesh, Odyssey, India, great women in history, historical clothing and costuming, and world travel photography.

Refreshments will be served!

"The Book Thief (2014)"

The Book Thief Movie Poster Google image from http://collider.com/wp-content/uploads/the-book-thief-poster.jpg

Saturday, July 19, 2014 - 2:00 pm

Rated: 12A, 131 min - Drama | War

Plot summary from IMDb. "In 1938, the young girl Liesel Meminger is traveling by train with her mother and her younger brother when he dies. Her mother buries the boy in a cemetery by the tracks and Liesel picks up a book, "The Gravediggers Handbook", which was left on the grave of her brother and brings it with her. Liesel is delivered to a foster family in a small town and later she learns that her mother left her because she is a communist. Her stepmother, Rosa Hubermann, is a rude but caring woman and her stepfather, Hans Hubermann, is a simple kind-hearted man.

Liesel befriends her next door neighbor, the boy Rudy Steiner, and they go together to the school. When Hans discovers that Liesel cannot read, he teaches her using her book and Liesel becomes an obsessed reader. During a Nazi speech where the locals are forced to burn books in a bonfire, Liesel recovers one book for her and the Major's wife Ilsa Hermann witnesses her action. Meanwhile Hans hides the Jewish Max Vandenburg, who is the son of a deceased friend that saved his life in the war, in the basement of his house and Liesel becomes his friend. One day, Rosa asks Liesel to deliver laundry to the Major and Ilsa invites Liesel to go to her library and tells that she can visit her to read whenever she wants. But in times of war there are many threats and the lives of Liesel, her family and friends will never be the same." ~ Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Hymn Stories Featuring
Opera Singer Michael Toby

Michael Toby Google image from http://www.observerxtra.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Post_ARTS_MichaelToby.jpg

Wednesday, August 13, 2014 - 2:30 - 3:30 pm

Come and hear favorite classics ... sung! by Michael Toby.

"Born in Toronto and raised in Trinidad, he [Michael Toby] enrolled at McGill to study to become a doctor, even though his heart was in music. A chance meeting with Barry Manilow made him switch gears ...

A few years later, he joined the music department at McGill, becoming an opera tenor and graduating with a master’s degree. After that, he switched gears again and went to Bible College, and now alternates performing with preaching at a church in rural Ontario.

He began performing the music of the Underground Railroad in 2010, after singing at a church with connections to the historic movement ...

Researching songs like ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ and ‘Go Down Moses,’ he came across the writing of Frederick Douglass, the black statesman and ex-slave who wrote extensively about the slaves’ music." ~ Info from Giving voice to a part of Canadian history by Will Sloan.

Each performer vying to out-perform the last, for a toss of a coin in the hat.

The buskers will rotate around Port Credit throughout the weekend to different performance spots --- also known as pitches. Expect to experience side-splitting comedy, eye-popping acrobatics and mind-bending daredevil stunts!

Now a three-day event with professional Buskers, numerous staging areas, spectacular fire shows and lots of “surprise fly pitches” throughout Port Credit - not to mention the incredible Xtreme Finale on Sunday with every Busker performing one big show!

A full weekend of family fun where you decide what to pay. Tips are strongly encouraged!

See the Buskers. This year's lineup features fabulous performers from Germany, Japan, Austria, Ireland, Australia, USA, UK and Canada.

Plot summary from IMDb. "Portrait of the artist as a young man. In spring, 1965, Bob Dylan, 23, a pixyish troubador, spends three weeks in England. Pennebaker's camera follows him from airport to hall, from hotel room to public house, from conversation to concert. Joan Baez and Donovan, among others, are on hand. It's the period when Dylan is shifting from acoustic to electric, a transition that not all fans, including Baez, applaud. In case you missed the recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel where his crew went around asking people what gluten was and got many hilarious and incorrect responses, Naturopathic Doctor, Aisling Lanigan is going to break it down: the who, what, when and whys of the Gluten-Free Diet!

Pedestrian Question - What is Gluten? Jimmy Kimmel Live. YouTube video, 3:49 min. Published on May 6, 2014. "Some people can't eat gluten for medical reasons, but a lot of people in Los Angeles don't eat gluten because someone in their yoga class told them not to. Jimmy wondered how many of these people even know what gluten is, so we sent a camera crew out to a popular exercise spot here in LA and asked people who are gluten-free a simple question: "What is gluten?"

Proper nutrition is essential to brain function. There is a myth that we only use 10% of our brain as human beings. Even if this myth is false, as scientists say, everyone wants to enhance their capacity for knowledge.

There are many nutrients that play vital roles in our ability to learn, focus and retain knowledge. If deficiencies are present, it is impossible to access your full cerebral capacity. Children are particularly vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies due to the fact that they are still developing. Additionally, therapeutic dosages of certain vitamins and supplements can help increase our capacity to learn.

Come and find out with Dr. Jacqueline Sales, ND how you can help your child, teenager or college/university student maximize their potential at school. Tips and tools that will undoubtedly lead to academic success!

Plot Summary from IMDb. "Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed-to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can...but if they should. Mushrooms have been prized for millennia and are held in the highest esteem by herbalists. Their medicinal applications are broad; they possess anti-inflammatory potential, can modulate the immune system, and support cognition. Benefits of mushrooms extend beyond the medicinal sphere, their use in environmental applications is impressive.

Are mushrooms the ultimate functional food that can confer health on humans and restore balance to the earth? Join Dr. Annie Salsberg as she discusses amazing mushrooms.

About Dr. Annie Salsberg: After completing her undergraduate degree from McGill University with a focus in Social Studies of Medicine, Annie traveled to and volunteered in Guatemala. There, she worked in a hospital and in an orphanage, dealing with acute care for expectant mothers and young children. Upon her return to Toronto, she held research positions in Womens' Health and Child Psychology at Toronto General Hospital and Sick Kids respectively.

A deep belief in the connection between mind, body, environment, and lifestyle, propelled her to pursue a career in Naturopathic Medicine. Since graduating from CCNM in 2005, Annie has deepened her knowledge of Mind Body Medicine through training at Harvard University. Her strong interest in peri-natal health is complemented by Doula certification. Annie practices individualized and compassionate healthcare. Teacher: Janet Jacks

With the launch of her new and life-changing book, Discover the Power of Food: The 10 Week Plan to Transform Your Life, Janet Jacks would like to personally invite you to do just that: discover the power of food.

This new and exclusive class introduces Janet's book while she takes you through the basics of health and what it can do to change your life. "The power to change your health is in your hands, and the time to do it is now." Over 30 years ago, Janet Jacks made this commitment to change her and her family's health through food. Out of that passion came Goodness Me! and our life-changing Lifewatchers program. Now, Janet is reaching out to more people than ever with her brand new book, Discover the Power of Food, and we want you to come help us celebrate and learn what it can do for you.

Come see why Janet got into the health food business, what keeps her here, and how you can change your life with food. Q&A and book signing to follow the class. Discover the Power of Food will transform your life in just ten weeks of simple changes, tons of tips, tools to keep you on track, and over 75 nutritious and delicious recipes that make it easy to live healthily.

Discover the Power of Food is backed by scientific research, endorsed by multiple naturopathic doctors, health experts, and best-selling authors, and includes a foreword by Dr. Kate Rheaume Bleue, ND (author of Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox: How a Little-Known Vitamin Could Save Your Life) and contributions by Dr. William Davis, MD (author of Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health).
