Celebrate Canada Day at Mississauga Celebration Square with a special performance by exhibiting artist, Vanessa Dion Fletcher. Mnemonic Memory recreates images of historic wampum belts using chalk paint on the city's concrete surfaces. This action creates a space for conversation and education about Indigenous history within a colonial context.

"'Mnemonic' is another word for memory tool. Mnemonics are techniques for remembering information that is otherwise quite difficult to recall: A very simple example is the '30 days hath September' rhyme for remembering the number of days in each calendar month. The idea behind using mnemonics is to encode difficult-to-remember information in a way that is much easier to remember." ~ Mind Tools.

Monday, July 11, 2016 - 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Absurd! Untrue! Unsafe! Bad Advertising from the Past! Say it isn't so! Unfortunately, it is.

We may squirm and chuckle as we explore these eye-popping, headshaking, bad advertments from the past. Though easy to dismiss by today's standards as laughable, it is an important barometer to gauge what social values were important at the time and by comparison, judge what future generations will think of us! Join Lianne Harris for this enlightening 1-hour presentation.

Lianne has been a history, culture and social studies resource specialist with the Toronto District School Board for almost 20 years and has been the guest instructor and workshop leader for teachers across many boards in Southern Ontario. To date, usually dressed in authentic period clothing, she has taught over 50,000 teachers and students. In 2003, she was selected by W.O.M.A.D. as one of Toronto's Women of Influence. She is the author of many books including A Winter's Knight (a blending of medieval history and fiction for teeenage readers), two medieval novels as well as non-fiction books on Bangladesh, Odyssey, India, great women in history, historical clothing and costuming, and world travel photography.

A note on Medicines to Help Us: Traditional Métis Plant Use, book used by Rav Singh in presentation: "Based on Métis artist Christi Belcourt's painting Medicines to Help Us, this innovative and vibrant resource honours the centuries-old healing traditions of Métis women. For this stunning set of twenty-seven gallery-quality prints and accompanying companion booklet, Christi Belcourt fuses her evocative artwork with Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Western Science.
