Info from Christkindl Market, Canada's Original - Kitchener, Ontario:
Experience the award winning Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario! Kitchener City Hall has been home to Canada's original Christkindl Market since 1996. Every Christmas, since medieval times, towns and cities across Germany come alive with the sights, sounds and smells of Christmas.
This year, the festival has been expanded to include more huts along King Street where you can enjoy Gluhwein, sweet and savoury food to eat now or take home. Shop outside and inside from over 90 vendors while you listen to choirs and bands, and watch dance groups. Take in the train room, blacksmiths demonstrations, live nativity and take a photo with one of the folkloric characters.
Meet Christkindl - The Christkind, Kristkind or "Christ Child" is the traditional Christmas giftbringer in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Christkindl is a diminuitive version of the Christkind. Our Christkindl (pronounced krisst-kindl), is depicted with long curly blond hair and a golden crown. She is accompanied by her 2 angels.
Meet Knecht Ruprecht - Knecht Ruprecht (or farmhand Ruprecht), has his origin in Germany and is a companion of Saint Nicholas (or Father Christmas). He seems to know if you've been bad or good. Knecht Ruprecht carries with him a bundle of switches and a sack filled with candies (for those who have been good).
