MuslimFest 2012

Come to the 9th Annual MuslimFest and enjoy two days of song and dance, film screenings, workshops and exhibits. There will be a market, food booths and vendors. There is also a Bouncing Castle and rides for kids. Maple Lodge Farms, a pioneer of the Zabiha Halal brand and Halal chicken products in Canada, is the title sponsor and main stage presenting partner of MuslimFest 2012. Maple Lodge Farms will give away free samples of delicious BBQ beef and chicken as well as fresh salads.

More than 50 performers, singing mainly in English, will take the centre stage. Performers include Canadian artists Irfan Makki, Tom Vendenberg and Dawud Wharnsby (born David Howard Wharnsby on June 27, 1972), a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet, performer, educator and television personality. Other performers include Junaid Jamshed from Pakistan, Baba Ali and Raef from the U.S. and Zain Bikha from South Africa, as well as Nii Addico, African drummer and performer, originally from Ghana.

"Tom Vandenberg is a Canadian puppeteer who worked with the Muppets in the mid-1980s. Tom is most known in the Muslim community for his work with Sound Vision’s Adam’s World Puppet Show spanning over 20 years. We are always honoured to have him participate at our festival year after year and share a laugh with the kids as Adam and Aneesah." ~ Info from MuslimFest.com. Tom's puppet show: Sunday, September 2, 2012 - 1:30pm - 3:30pm @ Noel Ryan Theatre, Mississauga Central Library (301 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. Mississauga, ON L5B). Adjacent to Celebration Square.

"Nii Addico has grown up with the sound of the drum as the backgr ound music of his life. Nii’s Grandfather, Nii Amukuaye, was a traditional African drummer . . . When Nii arrived in Canada in 2005 drumming became even more important to him. Nii missed the soundtrack of drums that he grew up with in Ghana. To help himself adjust to Canada and to relieve his homesickness, Nii started to play seriously." Info from MuslimFest.com.

Mayor Hazel McCallion will drop by on Saturday September 1 to welcome everyone to Celebration Square.

More than 250 volunteers will be around to make sure everything runs smoothly.

MuslimFest is proudly sponsored by: Maple Lodge Farms, IRFAN Canada, Sound Vision, Western Union, DawaNet, Hygienna, Halal Food Deals, KaraMia, Kamal Halal Vitamin, Human Concern International, MAC’s convenient stores, and Shaworma Express.

MuslimFest is Funded by: The City of Mississauga, Ontario Tourism, Canadian Heritage, and generous donors in the community.

Cameron is reluctantly persuaded to borrow his father's Ferrari, and together they hatch a plan to get Sloane out of class. Suspicious dean of students Ed Rooney knows all about Ferris, but can never catch him. Ferris' sister Jeanie is also frustrated that Ferris always gets away with his tricks and she doesn't. Furthermore, Ferris is an 'angel' in his parents eyes. It's Ferris' day off, he's out to enjoy himself, and he does!" ~ Written by Rob Hartill.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (film) from Wikipedia. "Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a 1986 American teen coming of age comedy film written and directed by John Hughes.

The film follows high school senior Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick), who decides to skip school and spend the day in downtown Chicago. Accompanied by his girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) and his best friend Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck), he creatively avoids his school's Dean of Students Edward Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), his resentful sister Jeanie (Jennifer Grey), and his parents. During the film, Bueller frequently breaks the fourth wall by speaking directly to the camera to explain to the audience his techniques and thoughts."

Info from Kaleidoscope Chinese Performing Arts Society (KCPA):

"We are proposing to present Chinese traditional dance and music performances and bring these precious arts and traditions to the vast community.

Our dances are characterized by stunningly colorful costumes and exhilarating performances which have always astounded audiences. We will present our fine Chinese ethnic and folk dances with gorgeous costumes and brilliant choreography representing a vast and varied assortment of traditional dance styles.

We will also present our fascinating Chinese classical music ensemble featuring various Chinese instruments including dizi (bamboo flute), guzheng (long zither) and erhu (2-string fiddle).

We will invite some audience to try on our traditional costumes and even learn to dance simple steps with us.

For our Chinese instrumental music performance, we will invite some audience to come to the stage to look closely at the instruments (such as Chinese dizi and erhu) and find out how they produce music. They can even try to play them.

We could also invite audience to sing a familiar Canadian song and then our performers will give a unique accompaniment with Chinese instrumental music."

It's not a job description, or a prescription for life; stress is a very real and measurable thing.

Monday, November 5, 2012 - 4:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Flu Shot Clinic provided by Region of Peel.

See also Let's Beat the Flu! List of all Mississauga Influenza Clinics 2012-2013. All sites are wheelchair accessible. Brampton | Caledon | Mississauga.

Peel Public Health will be offering free seasonal influenza immunization clinics to all Peel residents.

The seasonal Influenza vaccine is also available from your family doctor. Additionally, seasonal influenza clinics will be held at various participating workplaces.

There are two seasonal flu vaccines available for adults and children (ages 6 months and older) for the 2012-2013 flu season.

The 2012-2013 seasonal flu vaccine contains the same three components as last year. Annual immunization is recommended even if the vaccine strains have not changed. Immunity decreases over time and re-immunization reinforces protection for the coming influenza season.

A third seasonal flu vaccine is available for adults 65 years and older, who have no contraindications, living in Long-Term Care (LTC) centres only. This vaccine contains an adjuvant (an additive that enhances the effectiveness of the vaccine). This particular vaccine will not be available to individuals that do not live in the Long-Term Care (LTC) centres.

All individuals receiving the seasonal vaccine will be provided with verbal and/or written information about the risks/benefits of the vaccine along with any contraindications and precautions.

Those individuals who choose to be immunized are asked to sign consent for immunization.

The consent for immunization can be signed by individuals aged 14 years and over. For individuals under the age of 14 years, consent must be signed by a parent/legal guardian.

Synopsis from Fandango "Adapted from Beverly Cleary's perennially popular book series, Ramona and Beezus stars newcomer Joey King as Ramona Quimby, a grade-schooler with a big imagination. So big, in fact, that she often clashes with her no-nonsense teacher (Sandra Oh). When Ramona's upbeat dad (John Corbett) loses his job, the family -- including her teenage sister, Beezus (Selena Gomez), and their practical-minded mother (Bridget Moynahan) -- must make major adjustments, like dad learning how to run the house. Ramona dreams up various plans to make money so that she can save their house, but because everybody in the family seems too preoccupied to help her with her own worries, she turns to the one person who always has time for her, Aunt Bea (Ginnifer Goodwin). But even Aunt Bea is distracted these days because her ex-boyfriend -- and Quimby family next-door neighbor -- Hobart (Josh Duhamel) keeps trying to win Bea back." ~ Written by Perry Seibert, Rovi.

Let It Be (2004) Google image from http://fapa.org/YPG/TMP/Index_files/image005.jpg

Wednesday, November 21, 2012 - 6:30 p.m.

All 12 films in this series are shown on a cinema-sized screen. Admission is FREE but is restricted to persons 18 years of age and over. Films made in Taiwan. Language: Mandarin, Southern Min, English subtitles.

110 min. Documentary.

Library summary: Documentary. Three elderly farmers in the heart of the rice-producing countryside struggle with the toil of everyday life.

Let It Be from FAPA YPG Taiwan Film Festival. "Let It Be is a documentary on the daily lives of Taiwan’s rice farmers. Hear how these farmers cope with nature, modernization, and their spouses in an honest and oftentimes comical way.

The interviews with the rice farmers are mostly in Taiwanese (Southern Min) and the film also highlights many traditional beliefs and cultural practices that have remained unchanged in Taiwanese farming communities for generations.

This film is great for looking at Taiwan from an often-ignored and quickly vanishing vantage point: from the muddy shoes of a dedicated rice farmer."

Let It Be (2004 film) from Wikipedia. "Bo-bi-lok (literally 'happiness without rice' in Taiwanese; English title: Let It Be) is a documentary film produced in Taiwan in 2004, recording the lives of several old farmers (peasants) in Chhe-liau Village, Au-piah (i.e., Houbi Township), Tainan County (now part of Tainan City). It generated discussion and debate in the Taiwanese civil society about the impact on agriculture due to its membership in the World Trade Organization."

Tuesday, November 27, 2012 - Starting at 6:30 p.m.

Rated: PG-13, 93 min - Documentary

Plot Summary from IMDb. "From the Oscar-winning team behind MAN ON WIRE comes the story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child.

Following Nim's extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human. What we learn about his true nature - and indeed our own - is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling." ~ Written by Anonymous.

All 12 films in this series are shown on a cinema-sized screen. Admission is FREE but is restricted to persons 18 years of age and over. Films made in Taiwan. Language: Chinese (Mandarin) with English subtitles.

89 min. Documentary.

Yin tzan-tze (original title) - Also known as "Grandma's Hairpin".

Library summary: Documentary. After the Chinese Civil War, 600,000 soldiers retreated to Taiwan, leading to the separation of many families, including the director's father.

Grandma's Hairpin from International Documentary Film Festival. Director Hsiao Chu-chen points her camera at her father, a retired soldier. In 1949, the Nationalist government retreated from mainland China to Taiwan with 600,000 soldiers. In his twenties at the time, Hsiao’s father believed as did many others they would soon return to China with the Nationalist government. But it took forty years for relations across the straits to be re-established, and it was futile even to dream of returning home.

Hsiao uses an ornamental hairpin that belonged to her grandmother left behind on the mainland as the key to her father’s world, bringing forth his feelings towards the China of that era and the remembrances of other retired soldiers."

Grandma's Hairpin. Synopsis from International Documentary Film Amsterdam (IDFA). "Synopsis Following the Chinese civil war in 1949, the Communists won control of China and the defeated Nationalist Government, led by Chiang Kai-shek, was forced to retreat to Taiwan with 600,000 soldiers. This led to the separation of many families. Some people only returned forty years later.

The filmmaker focuses on the tragedy of her own family. Her mother and father appear in the film, making dinner, singing and praying together, remembering their pain from the past. The effect is that of an innocent, playful home movie made for fun and future grandchildren. But bit by bit, the pitiful story of these people, who were cut off from their families, denounced publicly and forced for many decades to perform hard labour, is revealed. Through interviews, but also using home-movie footage and a very calm voice-over, the director makes a personal but also universal journey into the past."

Grandma's Hairpin. In 1949, the Nationalist Government had lost the civil war against the Chinese Communists and retreated to Taiwan with about 600,000 soldiers. My father was one of them. Originally, the soldiers believed they would soon be returning to their homeland. But the years passed, and they would have to wait until 1987, when the government finally lifted the ban on private visits to China.

These vicissitudes have put the war veterans in an awkward position—China no longer feels like home, yet establishing a family and putting down roots in Taiwan have proved to be challenging. It was my father’s memory of his mother’s silver hairpin that led me into his world and the life stories of the old veterans.

The documentary is directed by a renowned Taiwanese documentary maker, Hsiao Chu-chen, who has received various awards. She stood out in 1998 with her film, Blood Stained Youth, about victims of the White Terror period in Taiwan. The Red Leaf Legend won her the Best Documentary Film award at both the Golden Horse Awards and Taipei Film Awards in 1999. The film was nominated at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

In 2000, Grandma’s Hairpin won the Taiwan Award at the Taiwan International Documentary Festival and the Best Documentary award at the Golden Horse Awards, on top of being nominated at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Pusan Film Festival, Asia Pacific Film Festival, and International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam."

Grandma's Hairpin. "This stunning documentary captures the unique life stories of veterans who are among some 500,000 soldiers who left their families and followed Chiang Kai-shek’s retreat to Taiwan in 1949, while in their early 20s or late teens. When the government finally lifted the ban on private visits to China about 40 years later, they found themselves in an awkward limbo where they could no longer adapt themselves to living in China, while putting down their roots in Taiwan also proved to be challenging.

Awards & Festival Selection: Best Documentary, Golden Horse Awards, 2000. Taiwan Awards, Taiwan International Documentary Festival, 2000, Seoul International Film Festival, Asian Pacific Film Festival, Amsterdam International Documentary Festival, The 51st Asian Pacific Film Festival."
