    Board of Directors Update:

Congratulations and thank you to all who participated in or donated to our annual Walk-a-thon. We achieved the highest pledge collection ever at $20,500+!!

We are excited to move into 2010 as some new and very exciting things are happening for Older Adult Centre members. You will remember from previous Board updates, that we have been working diligently on creating a new charity which will offer health and wellness services to our members and seniors in Mississauga. We are still waiting on approval from the Ontario Government for our charitable status. We should know by early 2010. We have already implemented some of the free services which will move over to the new charity, i.e. Telephone Reassurance, counselling, health workshops and events. The charity's name is Square One Seniors Wellness Services and we hope to officially launch it to the community soon.

It should be noted that we are able to offer these new programs and services because of government funding and partnerships with other community organizations. The Telephone Reassurance Program is funded by the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (MH-LHIN) in partnership with Peel Senior Link. The Counselling, Empowerment Group and a new Health Lecture Series are made possible through our partnership with Family Services of Peel. We are offering a new Living with Diabetes Support group by partnering with BALANCE for Blind Adults.

You will notice in the brochure that we are offering a couple of our programs at Peace Lutheran Church this winter season. We have run out of space at the Older Adult Centre and need to spread our wings into the community. The church has graciously opened their doors to us. We are also working on partnering with another community organization to offer more off-site active programs in the Spring of 2010.

    ~ Pat Fyffe, President

Benefits of Participation in Dance Classes
An Innovative Approach to Health Promotion:
Empowering Older Adults through Participation in Dance Classes

Are you taking dance classes for the first time this fall at Older Adult Centre?

Are you age 60 or older?

Sheridan Elder Research Centre is conducting a pilot research project that explores the benefits of dance participation for enhancing quality of life and improving physical health.

    Participation in this study involves:

    • Filling out several questionnaires at the start and end of your dance course that will ask about your general health, your quality of life, and your exercise habits.
    • A brief cognitive screening test at the beginning of the project.
    • A short interview at the start and end of your dance class to learn more about your quality of life and general health.
    • A short series of physical measurements, including balance, flexibility, endurance, and range of motion.
    • Keeping a journal of your experience with the dance class. It will be up to you how often you keep this journal.
    • Total time commitment: 4 hours.

At the end of the project, we will host an event for all of the people who participated in the project at Older Adult Centre to present our findings, and to recognize and celebrate those who helped make this project happen!

For more information, or to sign up to participate, please contact: Laura Surman, Program Coordinator at Older Adult Centre at 905-615-3207, or Kate Dupuis at 905-569-4634, or email:
