The Board of Directors of Older Adult Centre has some very exciting news to report this Fall. We are well on our way to launching our new Seniors' Service Charity that will provide health and wellness services to seniors in our community. The Board of Directors is just finishing up the final touches on the charity registration application for Square One Seniors Wellness Services to become a registered charity. We have been working with a lawyer to ensure that we follow the proper Canada Revenue Agency guidelines and this should expedite the approval process. Thr purpose of the new charity is: "to improve wellness and independence and to relieve loneliness and isolation of the aged by establishing, operating and maintaining senior citizens services to provide health, recreation, education, cultural activities and other programs for senior citizens."
We have already started to expand our services in this area. You will note below this article, three new services that we have initiated to assist seniors in our community: 1. Free Information and Support for Adults 50+; 2. Empowering Adults 50+ Free Drop-In Group Session; 3. Telephone Reassurance Program. We have partnered with Family Services of Peel to offer the one-on-one support and the group empowerment programs which are provided by a social worker. The new Telephone Reassurance program, in partnership with Peel Senior Link, was made possible through funding from the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).
The Board of Directors is also working hard to find extra program and service space in our community. We love our Square One location and plan to stay here for many years, but we are running out of space. We have new programs and services that we want to offer and need more space to make this happen. We hope to announce another satellite location by early 2010.

Are you taking dance classes for the first time this fall at Older Adult Centre?
Are you age 60 or older?
Sheridan Elder Research Centre is conducting a pilot research project that explores the benefits of dance participation for enhancing quality of life and improving physical health.
Participation in this study involves:
Filling out several questionnaires at the start and end of your dance course that will ask about your general health, your quality of life, and your exercise habits.
A brief cognitive screening test at the beginning of the project.
A short interview at the start and end of your dance class to learn more about your quality of life and general health.
A short series of physical measurements, including balance, flexibility, endurance, and range of motion.
Keeping a journal of your experience with the dance class. It will be up to you how often you keep this journal.
Total time commitment: 4 hours.
At the end of the project, we will host an event for all of the people who participated in the project at Older Adult Centre to present our findings, and to recognize and celebrate those who helped make this project happen!
For more information, or to sign up to participate, please contact: Laura Surman, Program Coordinator at Older Adult Centre at 905-615-3207, or Kate Dupuis at 905-569-4634.
