Board of Director's Update

Summer is a time for relaxing and renewal. I hope you spent time enjoying it.

Your Board of Directors met on August 25, 2010 at Chartwell Classic Robert Speck and worked diligently on the 5-year Business Plan. Ana analysis of our 5-year projections showed that we are in a deficit position. This required a review of our fees. We noted that membership fees remained unchanged for five years (2006-2010) due to socio-economic conditions. However, as our expenses have increased, we were forced to increase membership fees from $24 (residents) and $28 (non-residents) to $26 (residents) and $30 (non-residents) effective January 1, 2011. (Note: "Residents" refer to City of Mississauga only). While this increase will not defray the deficit, it will alleviate some of the pressure.

While planning for the future of the Centre, it is imperative that we put your needs first and that is why our program fees are kept affordable. Your membership in Older Adult Centre coordinates with membership in Square One Seniors Wellness Services and gives access to all Seniors Wellness Services programs.

You have given your support to the Centre without hesitation. In addition to our once-a-year fundraisers, Tree of Sharing, Walk-a-thon, etc., the Donor Board is a constant to which you can donate throughout the year. Your Fall Brochure has added new programs which I am sure you will enjoy. Thank you for your continued support. 2011 Winter Brochure will be available on Monday, December 6, 2010 and Winter Registration will begin on Wednesday, December 8, 2010.

Hats Off to:

Malini Sattan: our 2010 summer student who worked tirelessly updating our Square One Shopping Centre discount list, conducting the survey of needs, interest and trends and assisting with the Canada Day Children's Festival.

The Staff: Anne, Laura, Lina and Karmela - for their dedication to the planning and running of another successful Walk-a-thon. (Sue Hesjedahl, Executive Director, will give the details).

Your Board of Directors: who braved the heat to analyze the 5-year Business Plan.

Sue and Laura: who saw the need for a Code of Conduct for members of the Centre and created one.

Executive Director's Update

2010 Walk-a-thon:

Congratulations and thank you to all who participated in or donated to our annual Walk-a-thon on October 1, 2010. We achieved the highest pledge collection ever at $21,500+!! This is $1,000 more than last year. Wow, that is amazing!! These terrific results wouldn't be possible without the incredible effort and generosity of our top 3 pledge collectors and top 2 group collectgors.

Congratulations and thank you to Cam Wooledge (raised $6,000). Edna Michelin (raised $4,928), Corinne McCallum (raised $556). What a team effort from our Mall Walkers Group - 26 of them raised $3,901, and to the Chinese Golden Age Seniors - 8 of them raised $1,074. Thank you again to all who contributed.

Excerpt of Julia Le's article:

"Cam Wooledge has spent much of her life helping others. And at age 82, the Port Credit resident shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to volunteering.
Wooledge . . . was recently presented with the Mississauga Senior Citizen of the Year Award at a banquet held at the Mississauga Seniors Centre. The award, presented by the Rotary Club of Mississauga - Lakeshore, recognizes a senior who makes an outstanding commitment to the community.
Wooledge spends about 25 hours per week volunteering at the Older Adult Centre and a number of seniors' residences in Mississauga. She was nominated by Sue Hesjedahl, executive director of the older adult centre, who commended Wooledge for being a true community volunteer, rising above a childhood of abuse and neglect to help others.
Hesjedahl says Wooledge has dedicated her life to improving the lives of seniors and children through volunteerism and fundraising efforts. Wooledge single-handedly raised $6,000 for the older adult centre through its annual walk-a-thon and has been the top fundraiser for the last three years.
'Cam has an amazing gift of whistling and shares her wonderful gift with seniors across our community,' Hesjedahl added. 'She brightens the lives of each senior she performs for.'
Wooledge, meanwhile, says she's just keeping a promise to God she made as a child --- that if she survived the pain, she'd dedicate her life to making others happy. "For at least 60-70 years I've kept my word," she said. "I love to help kids and seniors and see the joy on their faces."
Wooledge said receiving the award has lifted her spirits after a trying year in which her husband, three of her sisters and her best friend all died. Helping others and whistling great tunes helps her cope, she added."

One Check Mark a Day Makes Sure Our Government Will Pay!

Older Adult Centre has been asked to provide daily attendance figures to Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long Term Care in order to ensure that we receive our Elderly Persons Centre funding grant.

No personal information is required - just check in on the clip board the first time you enter the Centre on any given day so we can be sure to include you in our daily count. This important funding assists with the Centre's operation and maintenance costs.

That's one check mark per person each day to make sure the Centre gets paid.
