But before leaving, Katniss is visited by President Snow who fears that Katniss defied him a year ago during the games when she chose to die with Peta. With both Katniss and Peeta declared the winners, it is fueling a possible uprising. So Snow decides to enact what is known as the Quarter Quell, the right to make a change to the Hunger Games, which he is allowed to do every 25 years. He decides to hold an edition of the Hunger Games wherein previous winners will compete again. Their mentor Haymitch thinks their best chance to survive is form an alliance with some of the others. The term also refers to the reading of coffee grounds, especially in the Middle Eastern tradition. The term has also been applied to the reading of wine sediments. The term derives from the French word tasse (cup), which in turn derives from the Arabic tassa (cup). Tasseography, otherwise known as tasseomancy or tassology, is the art of tea leaf reading. "Tasse" or "tass" is an Arab root, meaning small cup or goblet." Info from Tea Leaf Reading ~ Tasseography.

A History of Hygiene
by Lianne Harris
at Palisades on the Glen
May 14, 2014

How was soap invented? Who sold false teeth? What is the origin of the "beauty mark"? Why were Egyptian women bald? What cultures invented the toothbrush, the toilet? What beauty aids worked and what were sheer disasters?

In this lively, visual 1-hour presentation, Lianne Harris follows the evolution of beauty and hygiene and the pains and procedures those in the past have subjected themselves to in the pursuit of looking good and being socially acceptable.

Lianne has been a history, culture and social studies resource specialist with the Toronto District School Board for almost 20 years and has been the guest instructor and workshop leader for teachers across many boards in Southern Ontario. To date, usually dressed in authentic period clothing, she has taught over 50,000 teachers and students. In 2003, she was selected by W.O.M.A.D. as one of Toronto's Women of Influence. She is the author of many books including A Winter's Knight (a blending of medieval history and fiction for teeenage readers), two medieval novels as well as non-fiction books on Bangladesh, Odyssey, India, great women in history, historical clothing and costuming, and world travel photography.

Headhunters Movie Poster Google image from http://www.weeatfilms.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/headhunters-movie-poster.jpg

Wednesday, May 14, 2014 - 6:30 pm

Rated: 15, 100 min - Crime | Thriller

Short summary: An accomplished headhunter risks everything to obtain a valuable painting owned by a former mercenary.

Plot Summary from IMDb. "Roger Brown works as one of the most powerful headhunters in Norway. To support his extravagant lifestyle, he is also an art thief, which he does in cahoots with his friend, the gun toting Ove Kjikerud. They replace the originals with forgeries, which go undetected at least until the trail back to the thieves goes cold. His outward bravado, based primarily on building upon reputation, masks his insecurities, especially in his short physical stature. He feels he needs that confident demeanor and wealth to get what he wants, including his trophy wife, art gallery owner Diana Brown. However, he almost seems to like the thought of what Diana represents more than Diana herself. As such, he has a mistress on the side named Lotte. The issue of having a baby - Diana wants to get pregnant while Roger doesn't want her to - is another bone of contention in their marriage. The two sides of Roger's professional life intersect when Diana introduces him to Clas Greve, who would be perfect for the CEO position at Pathfinder, the job for which Roger is currently recruiting. Clas is also in possession of a priceless Rubens, which if Roger and Ove can steal it, would be by far their most lucrative theft to date. After he and Ove are able to steal the painting, things start going wrong for Roger. He learns that Diana is having an affair with Clas. And someone is trying to kill him. He learns that it is Clas, who seems to know his every move. Is Clas trying to kill him for Diana? Or because he knows about the theft? Or a combination of the two? Or is there a bigger picture which Roger will have to discover?" ~ Written by PF.

She also becomes re-acquainted with Rhett Butler, whom she had first met at the Wilkes barbecue. Now a widow, she still pines for the married Ashley and dreams of his return. With the war lost however, she returns to Tara and faces the hardship of keeping her family together and Tara from being sold at auction to collect the taxes. She has becomes hardened and bitter and will do anything, including marrying her sister's beau, to ensure she will never again be poor and hungry. After becoming a widow for the second time, she finally marries the dashing Rhett but they soon find themselves working at cross-purposes, their relationship seemingly doomed from the outset." ~ Written by garykmcd.

Rated: 12A, 141 min - Biography | Drama | History - Starring: Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Terry Pheto

Plot Summary from IMDb: "Nelson Mandela is a South African lawyer who joins the African National Congress in the 1940s when the law under the Apartheid system's brutal tyranny proves useless for his people. Forced to abandon peaceful protest for armed resistance after the Sharpeville Massacre, Mandela pays the price when he and his comrades are sentenced to life imprisonment for treason while his wife, Winnie, is abused by the authorities herself. Over the decades in chains, Mandela's spirit is unbowed as his struggle goes on in and beyond his captivity to become an international cause. However, as Winnie's determination hardens over the years into a violent ruthlessness, Nelson's own stature rises until he becomes the renowned leader of his movement. That status would be put to the test as his release nears and a way must be found to win a peaceful victory that will leave his country, and all its peoples, unstained." ~ Written by Kenneth Chisholm.

Square One Farmers Market (NEW location) from SNAP North Mississauga, August 2014, p. 22.
Photos and event by Melissa Gervais, Website code: pemfbz

Come visit your favorite farmer for the freshest fruits, vegetables, poultry, meats, eggs, bread, honey and much more ... Every Sunday from June 1 through November 2, 2014.

This Farmers Market has been managed since 1975 as a fundraiser. The Lions Club helps to support many organizations as a result of this Market. Visit http://bit.ly/Organizationssupported to see where the money goes.

Info from Mississauga Central Lions Club:
"Farmers Market - Come for your health – Support your community

Shopping at the Mississauga Central Lions Club Square One Farmer's Market is a healthy decision not only for you, but for your community's economy as well. For every dollar spent at the Market, another two dollars ripple through the provincial economy. In Ontario alone, sales at Farmer's Market total almost $500 million, leading to an economic impact of an astounding $1.5 billion!

For every one person you see working at the Market, another two are busy at work back home. As many as 27,000 people in Ontario are directly involved in preparing and selling the products you find at the Market. Furthermore, Farmers Markets are good for other businesses too. Studies show that 60 to 70 percent of market-goers visit neighbouring businesses on their way to and from the market.

Please patronize our Mississauga Central Lions Club Farmers Market. Established in 1975.

The club is thankful for its close relationship with Square One Shopping Centre management for over 38+ years."

De-Clutter Your Space, De-Clutter Your Mind

Don't just declutter, deown Google image from http://www.becomingminimalist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/dont-just-declutter-deown.png

Monday, June 2, 2014 - 10:00 - 11:00 am

Free lecture offering information on how to declutter both your space and your mind. Gillian Sweeney, President of Corner Comforts, Home Downsizing Services, along with Zeljko conducted this helpful seminar with Tips and Tricks on downsizing.

Gillian gave out some handouts to help us declutter our mind which will lead to decluttering our space.

Here is a summary of Gillian's Tips and Tricks for Decluttering:
● 1. Make immediate decisions about mail and newspaper. Throw out unwanted materials immediately.
● 2. Think twice about what you allow into your home. When you purchase something new, discard another item to make room for it.
● 3. Set aside 15 minutes a day to declutter. Start small rather than tackling the entire, overwhelming house at once.
● 4. Dispose of anything you have not used in a year.
● 5. Follow the OHIO rule: Only Handle It Once. If you pick something up, make a decision to either put it where it belongs or discard it.
● 6. Seek professional help if you cannot cope with the problem on your own.

Inside North Korea

Wednesday, June 4, 2014 - 7:00 - 8:30 pm

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) is also known as North Korea, and sometimes referred to by the media as the Hermit Kingdom due to its government's reluctance to engage in dialogue with the outside world. Kim Jong Un was officially declared the supreme leader following the state funeral for his father on 28 December 2011. North Korea has been under the rule of this new leader for over two years. Will this reclusive nation finally open up to the world, or will Kim keep his family's iron grip on retaining power at any cost?

The Library's Craig Rowland was in the first group to visit North Korea on the longest and most extensive tour ever made possible to western visitors. This is a repeat slide presentation by Craig Rowland who will show photos of his 18 days in North Korea in 2012. Craig will host a Q&A period afterward.

The Factory Arts String Quartet Performing Schumann and Mozart.

Review from CentreSpace for the Arts on the Factory Arts String Quartet: "The need to compose comes from many directions. In 1789, a penniless Mozart, desperate to keep his head above water, composed his 'Prussian' String Quartet No 22 to stem the tide of adversity. At the crest of a tital wave of creative energy, Schumann embarked on a highly productive 1842 with his String Quartet No. 1.

The Factory Arts String Quartet (Andrew Chung - violin, Julie Baumgartel - violin, Ben Bolt-Martin - cello, Joshua Greenlaw - viola) returns to the CentreSpace stage to perform these two works (May 23, 2014) ... These four individually outstanding musicians come together in a way that captivates and transports the listener to another world. The experience is not one to be missed."

Thursday, June 5, 2014 - 8:00 - 10:00 pm

Rated: PG, 98 min - Adventure | Comedy | Family

Plot Summary from IMDb. "When a young boy falls ill, his grandfather pops round to visit him. To cheer his grandson up, Grandpa has brought a storybook; The Princess Bride, a tale of the love between the beautiful Buttercup and the besotted Westley, a love cruelly interrupted by Westley's tragic apparent death at sea when seeking his fortune. Heartbroken, Buttercup has sworn never to love again, but accepts the marriage proposal of the rich and handsome Prince Humperdinck, heir to the throne of Florin; but death is no barrier to true love, and in a story filled with exotically-accented swordsmen, big-hearted giants, genius kidnappers, sadistic torturers, vile swamps, Rodents of Unusual Size, the Dread Pirate Roberts and a somewhat embittered miracle worker, the love between Westley and Buttercup twists and turns on a path filled with adventure. Will the True Love of Westley and Buttercup win the day? Will Inigo Montaya find the six-fingered man who murdered his father? Will Humperdinck's evil plans come to fruition? And, more importantly, will Grandpa be able to tell the story without any of the yucky kissing?" ~ Written by Scott Nisbet.

Craig Rowland

The most isolated community in the world is found on the island of Tristan da Cunha, located smack in the middle of the south Atlantic Ocean. About 80% of the island's economy is based on fishery.

Craig Rowland spent 23 days on Tristan in the autumn of 2013 among the 259 residents with only 7 different surnames on the entire island. This means "slim pickings for expanding the gene pool." Craig will give a photo presentation showing what life is like on Tristan, where your nearest neighbour is 2429 km away.

According to Craig, a long-time library assistant with the Mississauga Library, "Cunha" is pronounced "COO-na" as Tristan da Cunha is a British dependency so the word is not pronounced "COON-ya" with a Portugese nasal sound. "First sighted in 1506 by Portuguese explorer Tristão da Cunha, who named the main island after himself, Ilha de Tristão da Cunha even though rough seas prevented him from landing on the island." (Info from Wikipedia). When the volcano erupted in 1961, residents of the entire island of Tristan da Cunha were forced to evacuate to Great Britain for 18 months. Tristan's British ties may be seen in the two TV channels available on the island today: ITV and BBC One. ~ Supplementary info from "Librarian Checks Out Remote Places Around the Globe" by Joseph Chin, Mississauga News, 2 April 2014, p. 22.

Lost Civilizations
by Lianne Harris
at Palisades on the Glen
June 11, 2014

For as long as we have founded civilizations, we have also lost them. Past peoples have built great societies, recorded their influential and advanced existence for us to acknowledge. Others relied on rivals to write their history, in time becoming the stuff of legends. Many more societies, for whatever reasons, just vanished into the mists of time. In every case, however, these cultures leave us with three burning questions: Who were they? Where did they go? And Why?

Take a visual 1-hour journey with Lianne Harris, trekking over wind-swept deserts, through steamy rainforests, snowy wastelands, and swim underwater, comfortably exploring some of these incredible lost worlds, finding fascinating answers along the way.

Not Rated: 85 min - Crime | Drama

Short summary: A Moroccan gardener is accused of murdering his wealthy employer on the Côte d'Azur.

Movie Info from Rotten Tomato. "An unjustly convicted man fights for justice in this drama based on a true story. Omar Raddad (Sami Bouajila) had worked for years as a gardener for Ghislaine Marchal (Liliane Nataf), an elderly woman living in the South of France. In the summer of 1991, Marchal was founded murdered in the basement of her home, with the message "Omar M'a Tuer" -- literally "Omar Has Kill Me" -- written in her own blood on the wall. Raddad quickly became the prime suspect, even though he had a viable alibi, and he was convicted and sent to prison. However, a journalist covering the case, Pierre-Emmanuel Vaugrenard (Denis Podalydes), had a hard time believing Marchal would scrawl a message about her killer with her last ounce of strength, particularly one that was grammatically incorrect, and he began investigating the case, firm in his belief that Raddad was a victim of racism while the real killer had escaped justice. Directed by Roschdy Zem, Omar M'a Tuer (aka Omar Killed Me) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival." ~ Written by Mark Deming, Rovi.

Short summary: A union representative's belief system is put to the test in the aftermath of a violent home invasion.

Plot Summary from IMDb. "At a French shipyard, a trade unionist named Michel deliberately arranges to have himself on the dockworkers' randomly chosen downsizing list to spare another of his fellow workers. While he has his severance package and his friends and family's generosity to ease this sacrifice, this also gets his home invaded and robbed along with his wife and friends. Through pure luck, Michel finds out the identity of one of his assailants, a young worker who was on the same downsizing list himself, and gets him arrested. However, both Michel and his wife find that their vindictive satisfaction is soured by their realization of their assailant's motives and the larger consequences of their revenge. Struggling with their conscience, the couple finds themselves independently trying to live up to their ideals for a greater sense of justice." ~ Written by Kenneth Chisholm.

The parents, in their zeal to attract industry to their town, have all but neglected their children. As a result, the kids begin to create their own entertainment, which involves vandalism, theft, and general hooliganism. During an incident when one of the kids brandishes an unloaded gun at town cop Ed Doberman, he is shot and killed. When the parents gather the next night to discuss the killing and the level of lawlessness among the youth, they soon find out that their kids have had all they can take."~ Written by Rick Gregory.
