How does the brain respond to variations in physical feature of our indoor workplaces and residences? How does this affect our appreciation of these environments and our decisions to enter or leave? Dr. Oshin Vartanian, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto Scarborough, shares his research.

On average, we urban dwellers spend about 90% of our time indoors, and share the strong intuition that the physical features of the places we live and work in influence how we feel and act. Review by user Ka Do from Poland: "Afonia is older than Tolstoy's heroine [Anna Karenina]. Her husband is just an ex-boxer, ex-inmate of a Nazi concentration camp and almost ex-living person as he is paralyzed after an accident. Her daughter is already married. And although Afonia's name is Russian, she is Polish. The only thing both heroines share is love of a strong, handsome and addictive man. A Russian man ... [Afonia] was all alone when she had to take care of her young daughter, her home and her bees during the war. Now she makes a man's decisions and she is not afraid of taking what or whom she wants ..."

Action Plan for Successful Aging from SNAPD North Mississauga, April 2015, p. 20.
Photos and event by Bob Askin, Website code: perbs9.

Enjoy a complimentary lunch and presentation at Chartwell Robert Speck on discussions between seniors and their children with Grayson Maxwell of Home Instead. The action plan of aging refers to starting vital conversations early between seniors and their adult children, and finishing them with a plan, taking the guesswork out of aging.

For more information, check out: The 40-70 Rule Or contact: gmaxwell@homeinstead.com.

Many experts agree: by the time you approach age 40 and a loved one is around 70, you should have had the 'talk' about issues so many families want to avoid. Topics such as living and financial choices, health, driving, dating and end of life can be perplexing. The Home Instead Senior Care? network refers to this concept as the 40-70 Rule, a program launched in 2008 to start important conversations early, before a crisis occurs.

You're welcome to tour Chartwell Robert Speck after the presentation and lunch.

Wednesday, March 18, 2015 - 6:30 pm

Note: All Polish films in this series are restricted to persons 18 or older.

Rated: NR, 105 min - Drama | History - 25 February 2011 (Poland)

Director: Antoni Krauze
Writers: Miroslaw Piepka, Michal Pruski
Stars: Piotr Andruszkiewicz, Justyna Bartoszewicz, Magdalena Bochan

Film Review: Czarny czwartek – Jan Wiśniewski padł (2011). "Czarny czwartek looks to construct a multi-layered examination of the events of the winter of 1970 in the trójmiasto area. It focuses on three distinct areas of action: the political decision-making level of closed-door military and politburo meetings, the street level conflicts between protestors and the army and military police, and, finally, the pained heart of the movie which examines the experiences of the Drywa family during that fateful period of violence and unrest. This is a classic ‘realist’ film structure in Poland, that clearly demonstrates the large-scale operations of society and how they then filter down to impact upon the everyday working man and woman.

At the very end of the film there is a delightfully constructed series of closing shots, that effectively works as a climactic emotional montage. With the Drywa family attempting to escape their politburo organised fate by getting on a train to Slupsk, the carriages pass by the scenes of the worst violence along the trójmiasto’s shipyards. Krauze focuses the viewer’s attention on young Romek Drywa and these snapshots of his father’s workplace (and the sight of his father’s death) have all the more resonance for being suggestively located in the youthful consciousness of the next generation. This artful sequence transcends some of the seemingly televisual limitations of what has come before, but regardless of this unevenness Czarny czwartek is still a haunting and fiercely angry work, worthy of more widespread attention.

Watch Trailer: The Black Thursday / Czarny Czwartek. Janek Wiśniewski padł (2011) - Movie Trailer [HD] 1080p . YouTube video, 0:41 min.

Bringing Ancient Wisdom to Modern Times

Monday, March 23, 2015 - 6:30 - 8:00 pm

Instructor: Lari Laurikkalla

Join expert Lari Laurikkalla as he explores the impact mushrooms can have on your immunity, memory, and stress! He will show you how ancient wisdom on mushrooms can be applied to your life today. According to Laurikkalla, "The best mushrooms are among the safest medicinal foods, with benefits for humans ranging from enhanced physical performance to hormonal balance. At one time, they were worth their weight in silver - for a reason. Chinese medicine has used medicinal mushrooms for thousands of years."

Lari Laurikkala from Four Sigma Foods gives a presentation about medicinal mushrooms. He starts with a historical look on how long mushrooms has actually been part of our habitat and biological ecosystem. Part of these mushroom are medicinal mushrooms, which can be used as a part of our diet, many times mixed with water and consumed like tea.

Bio: Lari Laurikkala is a chef and health food expert from Helsinki, Finland who dedicates all his time to talk and teach about health, natural foods, and herbalism. He currently works as the product manager and partner in Four Sigma Foods - a UK based Superfood company. This role takes him around the world sourcing the best health food products. Lari also constantly travels around Europe giving lectures on medicinal mushrooms and adaptogenic herbs. Laurikkala travels the world, sourcing the best health food products from each continent and bringing his knowledge to the public.

See also: Revealing the Secrets of Medicinal Mushrooms by Julie Daniluk: Lari Laurikkala of Four Sigma Foods, guest blog on the benefits of medicinal mushrooms.

"The so called medicinal mushrooms have given us many important pharmaceutical medicines and anticancer treatments. Actually about 40% of today's western medicines utilize mushrooms. Out of many million different fungal species, roughly 300-400 of them have been identified with medicinal properties. This means that they can be anything from antiviral to anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective to anticancer.

Some of the most valued mushrooms and with the longest record of use are Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Chaga (Inonotus obliquus), Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor), Cordyceps (Ophiocordyceps sinensis) and Shiitake (Lentinula edodes). In the same order, these mushrooms have been proven to be effective against stress, support the immune system, have anticancer properties, treat fatigue and support the liver."

Saturday, March 28, 2015 - 10:00 - 11:30 am

The northernmost part of the Eastern Deciduous forest, known as the Carolinian Zone in Canada, hosts numerous native wildflowers found nowhere else in the country. Many of these species are endangered due to loss of habitat, or years of over-harvesting from the wild. Join Nina Barabas, who will explore the impacts of including them in our gardens. Could we change their fate?

Nina Katalin Barabas, PhD, is the co-author of Wildflowers of Riverwood, Field Guide to Wildflowers of Mississauga's Garden Park and the Greater Toronto Area.
