Message from Square One Seniors Wellness Services

As the autumn season approaches, it is refreshing to watch the leaves turn glorious colours and observe birds preparing for winter. This is also the time we stock up our pantries and prepare our homes for the cold season ahead. Unfortunately, we often forget to take care of our own health and wellness.

With this in mind, check out one of the varied and mostly free health and wellness options this fall, ranging from our Telephone Reassurance Program, health and wellness clinics, workshops, Drug Awareness Event or Sensible Living Series topics listed in the 2013 Fall Activity Guide. We are thrilled to announce the addition of Dental Clinics for one year, thanks to funding from Green Shield Canada. Clinics are available to older adults who don t have access to dental plans.

Without funding, we could not provide free programs/services. One major source of funding for SOSWS is the Annual Walk-a-Thon. Be sure to join us on Friday, October 18, 2013 for our annual event. This year, our Walk will be remodeled into a Fit-a-Thon. As our facility and Square One Mall are both undergoing renovations, so too will this event. Be sure to come yourself or put together a team for even more fun!

The Fit-a-Thon event this year will have additional features: welcoming of groups to sign up, prizes for best team and individual costumes (costumes are optional and the theme is your choice) and the event will be held inside the Centre rather than throughout the Mall. There are prizes for the top 3 individual fund-raisers and top fundraising group.

Another update to share with you is regarding our Board of Directors. Judy Willson and Faron Langdon have retired from the Board and we thank them for their dedication and efforts. At our AGM held June 27, 2013, a new Board Director was voted in - welcome to Po Ping Ngai! Please look at the complete listing of Board members in the 2013 Fall Activity Guide. Thank you to our supporters and all the best to you in health and wellness!
