Specialty Care Mississauga Road
Becomes

Silverthorn Care Community!

Seniors Smiling Google image from http://www.cmsne.org/public%20policy/seniors_smiling.jpg

Wednesday, May 6, 2015 - 6:30 - 7:30 pm

Specialty Care Mississauga Road to become Silverthorn Care Community!

Effective May 1, 2015, Specialty Care Mississauga Road will change the name of its home to Silverthorn Care Community, to celebrate its connection to the area and local community.

The change was inspired by the organization's new vision, to awaken our communities to the positive possibilities of life's next chapters, and involved input from residents, families and employees.

"We are very proud of our home, our community, and of the strong foundation and reputation we have built; and wanted to honour this in our new name," said Justine Welburn, Executive Director. "Our home's namesake, Mr. Thomas Silverthorn (1788-1834), was one of the original landowners of the property on which our Home currently sits. He bravely fought in the war of 1812. (Veteran War of 1812, 2nd Regiment, York Militia). We felt it was important to take a fond look back at our history before taking our next big leap forward and it certainly helped us get inspired."

This new identity follows an announcement from Silverthorn Care Community's parent company, Leisureworld Senior Care Corporation, regarding its decision to rebrand itself as Sienna Senior Living. This rebranding is accompanied by the launch of the organization's new brand positioning statement: the warmth of human connection.

Specialty Care Mississauga Road will be celebrating this change with a sign unveiling and launch party on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. The event is open to the community and will include special guests, Thompson's Company, a group of local War of 1812 reenactors, and brief presentation by Matthew Wilkinson, Chief Historian of Heritage Mississauga.

To RSVP, please contact Melissa McVie at 905-812-1175 ext 752 ,or by email: melissa.mcvie@specialty-care.com

Do you love gardening? Are you concerned about Mississauga's environment? Whether you are a new gardener looking for support or an experienced one who is willing to share what you know, there is a place for you in Streetsville Horticultural Society. Even gardeners who have moved from homes into apartments and no longer actively garden are most welcome as volunteers.

The main purpose is to beautify Mississauga through the planting of trees, shrubs and flowers. We do this in a variety of ways either by planting them ourselves or assisting others or encouraging others to do it. The Streetsville Horticultural Society volunteers are busy each year with local community beautification projects such as the gardens at Leslie Log House, Rotary Park and Leisure World Long-Term Care Home in Streetsville.

Please join the Streetsville Horticultural Society at this Monthly Meeting. Program highlights include:
● Guest speaker: Diane Greenfield on "Living Life as a Gardener"
● FREE Admission
● Refreshments
● Draw Prizes

Speaker Bio: Diane is a retired secondary school teacher. She has taken formal training from the University of Guelph to become a master gardener and worked and volunteered in that program for about 12 years and was the chair of the Simcoe County group. She lives in Lafontaine on a 50-acre property that has many log buildings plus her home, all surrounded by large Gardens. For many years, she gave garden workshops called "A Morning in the Garden". It was held in a historic pink log studio on her property. She has held an annual one-day plant sale attracting up to 600 people for over 20 years.

Currently, Diane does garden consultations helping people to reimagine their garden spaces and create beautiful low-maintenance gardens. Twenty-one years ago, she founded the Library Garden Tour www.librarygardentour.ca to raise money for local libraries and is the chair of the tour again this year. Over the years, they have discovered over 400 hidden garden treasures and raised over $150,000.00 for area libraries. See History of the Library Garden Tour.

Fraud Prevention Workshop

Fraud Prevention Google image from http://mediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/wcbu/files/201409/Fraud_prevention.jpg

Thursday, May 21, 2015 - 2:00 pm

Workshop presented by Peel Regional Police. Learn how to safeguard your privacy and resist scams.

"Frauds are one of the most prolific, yet easily prevented crimes provided that you are cautious when asked to provide information from an unsolicited source and exercise caution prior to sending money or completing a 'deal'.

Fraud is theft with trickery. Fraudsters will take advantage of a naïve person and/or often use a person's own emotions to trick them into sending funds or entering a service agreement. This helps to explain why the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre's top 3 scams involve service, an offer of a prize or are presented as an emergency such as in the case of the 'grandparent' scam when a fraudster attempts to defraud a senior by posing as their grandchild then demanding money over the phone in order to help themselves get out of 'trouble'."

You can learn more about this and other frauds and how to protect yourself at this workshop.

All welcome, no registration required.

Come celebrate the opening ceremonies on Friday evening at 7:30 pm on the Outdoor main stage at the Hershey Sportzone (north parking lot), featuring a Parade of Nations, Special Guests and Musical Performances.

Carassauga Festival of Cultures is gearing up for its 30th celebration taking place throughout Mississauga on May 22, 23, and 24, 2015.

Carassauga Festival of Cultures is a fascinating tour around the world where "travellers" can experience an extraordinary array of music, dance, art, costume, fashion, history and cuisine.

In 2015, 28 Pavilions representing over 70 cultures located in various cultural and recreation centres in Mississauga will give visitors the opportunity to "travel the world" without leaving the City. During the three days, visitors moved from one Pavilion to another having their Passports stamped as they enter each Pavilion.

Come and enjoy fun-filled activities including sports demonstrations, interactive children's entertainment and face painting at the Kids Zone located at the Hershey SportZone - Soccer Field, on the lower level. There are lots of games, energizing activities and children's entertainment. Entrance included with the price of an adult Festival Passport admission. See Carassauga for Kids for more details. Come and Meet Carassauga's Mascots Carra and her sister. Your help is needed in naming her. Send your suggestions to info@carassauga.com for a chance to win a pair of Carassauga Passports.

Carassauga's Charity & Community Challenge is a friendship powered fundraising initiative designed to help participants raise funds for their organization in a new and innovative way. Instead of taking part in a walk, bike ride or another initiative, the Carassauga Challenge allows participants to complete a fun task when they arrive into a Carassauga pavilion -allowing them to experience cultural diversity and raise funds for their preferred cause.

Buy your Carassauga Passport - $10 in advance (until May 22, 2015), $12 at the door of any of the Pavilions. Children 12 and under are FREE when accompanied by an Adult Passport holder.

The Carassauga passport entitles a visitor to unlimited entry into all the Pavilions during the Festival hours.

Ride FREE - Use your Carassauga Passport on a MiWay or Carassauga shuttle bus during the Festival hours and travel FREE between all satellite Pavilions, connecting with the Hershey Centre and Square One Transit Terminal.

Passports are sold in advance at various locations throughout Mississauga, including city Libraries and online through the Carassauga website: http://www.carassauga.com/

If you are driving, parking is FREE at all Pavilion locations.

See Carassauga 2015 Transit Info and Carassauga 2015 Shuttle Bus Route Details. Which Pavillion at Which Location.

Passports purchased online must be picked up at the Carassauga Office between Monday to Friday from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm at the Hershey Centre, SportZone, 2nd Floor, 5600 Rose Cherry Place, Mississauga, ON L4Z 4B6. Advance Passports will be sold until 6:00 pm on Fiday, May 22, 2015.

This 7th annual community event is open to all and we count on your attendance to help maintain and learn more about this sensitive, special area. This event is a celebration that marks not only the value of the provincially significant wetland itself, but the importance of communities celebratng and experiencing the natural world at their doorstep.
