A centre, operated by and for Mississauga's Older Adult Residents who are 50+ years of age, which provides social, health, educational and recreational opportunities to enhance their quality of life.
At the Annual General Meeting held in the Auditorium on April 20, 2010, Esther Williams was elected as President of Square One Older Adult Centre. Esther has been a member of the Board since 2003, holding various positions and most recently in the capacity of Vice President. Esther was born in Barbados and immigrated with her family to Trinidad, West Indies in 1945 and then to Canada in 1962. Esther attended Carleton University and then the University of Toronto to obtain her B.A. in English and Economics and further study to obtain her Teaching Certificate. She taught for the Toronto and Peel School Boards. She worked for the Ministry of Finance as a Property Appraiser for 28 years before retiring in 2000. Esther is an active volunteer with Eden Church. She is a mother and grandmother.
The membership also elected two new Directors to the Board: Juliet Rebello as the Director of Travel and Tessie Buena as the Director at Large.
Juliet Rebello is an active community volunteer and one of the founders of the 55 Plus Goan Association of West GTA (Greater Toronto Area). She has been the leader of our Goan Seniors Group at Square One Older Adult Centre for the last couple of years. Julet was a Teacher in Kenya for 10 years and then started in the Travel Industry where she has an extensive background until she retired in 2005. Her travel experience includes handling group tours, work with the airlines including CP Air, Canadian Airlines and Air Canada. Juliet and her husband enjoy travelling personally and have toured much of Ontario and other parts of Canada.
Tessie Buena is active volunteering with the Filipino community. She is the daughter of the late Frank and Dory de Leon who were the founding members of our Silayan Filipino Volunteer Group. She is currently their treasurer. Tessie has been an active volunteer with the Canadian Citizenship Court for the past 10 years. She is the Chairperson of the SantaCruzan Group of Mississauga and Black Nazarene. She actively volunteers with her church. She is also one of our Income Tax Volunteers. Tessie retired recently after working 37 years with Canada Border Services Agency.
We have added a new Ex-Officio position to the Board of Directors and welcome City of Mississauga, Ward 4 Councillor, Frank Dale as a non-voting Member of the Board.
We extend a warm welcome to Juliet, Tessie and Councillor Dale. We are pleased to have them join our Board. Please see the full list of Board Members below.
We would like to thank our retiring Board Members and commend them on their hard work and dedication to Square One Older Adult Centre. Retiring Board Members include: Shirley Corbett who has been on the Board since 1997, most recently as the Past President; Marion Duff who has been on the Board since 2005, most recently as the Director of Facilities; and Sasha Zivkovic who joined the Board in 2008 as the Director oif Special Eventsa dn Fundraising. And we would like to thank retiring President Pat Fyffe who will now be our Past President. Pat has been on the Board since 2002.
We will be holding another brief Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 as a result of a change in our fiscal year end to March 31st and to fill the vacancies on the Board. Please join us for the meeting at 12:15 p.m. followed by lunch at 1:00 p.m. Click here to see AGM details.

It's time to celebrate Seniors Month with many special events.
Our 3rd Annual Variety Show kicks off the month with two great performances by our talented members: Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. and Friday, June 4, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. We have a free Multicultural Information Fair on Tuesday, June 15, 2010 - Check the bulletin board for more details. Chartwell brings their free Senior Star Regional Competiton to the Square One Older Adult Centre on Thursday, June 17, 2010, then on Friday the 18th, all our cards and games players are invited to a free afternoon of bridge, cribbage, euchre, rummy, dominos, Wii bowling and Trivial Pursuit at our free Seniors Month Games Day. Plan to attend Amica's free Seniors BBQ at the Living Arts Square on Thursday, June 24, 2010 and our 2010 Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, June 29. Top off the month on Thursday, July 1st with the free Canada Day Children's Festival at Hazel's Walk.
We are pleased to be inviting individuals to join our dynamic team of volunteers today. We are seeking: Cafeteria support, Wii game leader, Craft leader, Centre Fundraising team, Tea Party Gals leader and Board of Directors.
